Ah but thats a more sturdy, 19 late 70's original design, V6, much stronger after the Mods to the Cams

The 2.oi 16v engines are an all alloy lump, mind, come to think of it, so is the PRV...

Mine is just approaching 158,000 , uses almost no oil and there is virtually no smoke in the exhaust. A mate recently wanted a race with his 306 td as he reckoned it would waste my HDI , in his dreams !! He later said he was amazed there was no visible smoke from my Xantia despite me being totally flat out ! Actually that surprised me too !!

Anyway , good oil , changed when it should be in combination with long journies will allow these diesels to achieve huge mileages. Mine almost never gets started without doing at least 35 miles. Some days the engine never cools down from morning start to getting back home.
Short trips and poor servicing are the engine killers.

Short trips KILL Petrols, but this problem DOES NOT affect Diesels...

(NO Andrew, Im NOT getting at you! Im stating a fact)

You do 5 miles a day in a petrol, and watch the Oil filler cap fill up with Mayonayse... however do it in a DERV and you wont get any..

The secret is hidden in the oil ( and also in the driver who listens his car

).
I change oil every 10k km, oil filter every 20k and also I apply engine flush every 40k.
What I get is a nicely ticking engine. Engine cover has never been opened.
Sometimes oil consumption is around 0,25 lt after 9.5-10k km.

Of course for a heavenly ride don't forget LHM changes ...

Have to disagree , short journeys kill any engine. If an engine spends a disproportionate amount of time at less than full operating temp then the oil gets fuel diluted and becomes acidic with combustion byproducts that are not evaporated by normal operating temp. Changing the oil at far more frequent intervals will mitigate this to some extent but even then the engine will have a shorter life.

Yes, agree with you HDI. If you habitually do a lot of short journeys, as I do, the oil needs to be changed very frequently, especially in the winter months.

Don't bother with a super Carlos Fandango oil. The cheaper mineral stuff will do, provided it meets specification, as you'll be changing it regularly. 2,000 mile intervals in the winter is not too soon.

Which reminds me, the V6 is already due a change....

Ive seen HDi cars with over 350K miles and been told of them with more than that, so im sure if looked after they go and go.

My C5 has almost 117K miles and perfroms like a new car, no smoke, never uses oil or coolent, just superb. Very economical too.

Although im getting used to the 2.1TD Xm now, which is every bit as good to drive as the HDi, hmm i might even prefer the 2.1 engine. It seems just as economical, id actually say it sounds better on the go than the HDi. The 2.1TD has the same power as the C5 with 110bhp, but as i found out the other night the Xm is very slightly fater to 60! Which i was a bit surprised at.

I agree with oil changes, i do them every 6K miles on the HDis, including filter - why change the oil and not the filter

makes no sense.

As the HDis do quite a few miles, 6K miles is usually in around 4 months.

Some of our cars do very few miles, so i change the oil and filter every 6 months. Thats usually what i go by, every 6 months or 6K miles, depends on what they reach first.

I always use a forte engine flush in all of our cars on every oil change. And fuel system cleaners and clean the air intake too - this often works wonders.

You can never over service a car
