Xantia Clutch

Unread post by jtownson »

Hi All.

I have a 95 1.8 8v Xantia Hatch and for the last few months when I am using the clutch a lot there is a burning smell. Also now and again when i set off say from traffice lights and i release the clutch the car will judder alot as it sets off but is fine when it gets going. (its not my poor clutch control honest :) )

Does this call for a replacement clutch? and how much would i expect to pay at a garage for it to be replaced?

Thanks for your help

hi J

yes sounds like its time for a new one.. I think I payed about £50 for my 1.8 clutch, and it took about 4 hours..

I would expect a garage to charge around £150 all in ...

hope that helps

When you say "using the clutch" does that mean riding it at traffic lights or balancing on the bite point?

If so thats what the burning smell is, as the friction plate is being cooked and worn away. If the clutch plate is worn it will start to judder and soon slip.

However, another cause could be oil on the friction plate, which is buring off as you drive it, that would also cause the slight judder too.

Either way id say iy sounds like your needing a new clutch.

Chris.

That sounds extortionate Mike.
Get a quote from George Fraser in Sunderland.
I'll ask the guys who did my C5 recently - still haven't got the name of the injector-wallah yet, they have been away apparently.

£180 for a clutch job is a bargain :D

How much do you charge for doing a heater matrix Malcolm?
I need one doing urgently on the V6 and I'm running out of time due to other commitments :(

Is that just the 1.8i or TD1.9 or doesn't it matter a great deal?

Another poster on here who's a Citroen trained garage man said he can
change a clutch in an hour and a half so I guess practice makes perfect!?

sorry I meant £150 plus parts was a good price..

ie. 150 for labour, which I would be happy to do in the North East, Superloopy ,as I need the cash :)

about to pay £1400 for a flight

im not sure hunny,
as the only/first one i did took me about three days, and that was about 4 years ago, so i might need the practice and time to realy get into the job TEA HE,
