Personally, I'd advise you try and avoid buying credit. If you can afford relatively high running costs, have you calculated if leasing is an option for you? The benefits are numerous.

Mike - I'm not entirely sure what leasing entails tbh.

I don't think I will go the loan route, I do truly hate being in debt and have been debt free for so long now and it is good. I did have another idea tonight and that is to go back to a Xantia HDi (I did like my one a lot) and use the money I save on fuel to purchase what I'm looking for in the near future. All that entails is trying to find a Xantia at the right price, this time preferably Exclusive and not silver

EDIT: Also been thinking of an Activa even though I know its probably no better on fuel than my current V6

I don't know the in's and out's anymore but leasing is like long-term car rental. You only need to insure and fuel it, they do take care of everything else. You get a new car every three years, can change cars with ease etc. Someone once told me it worked out cheaper than buying which meant they got more car for their money.

On the other hand, if you're thinking of going back to a Xantia to save money, why not get a Pre-hdi and run it on waitrose discounted veg oil?

We do leasing at Mercedes where I work (until 5pm this evening at least).

It's like finance in that you pay a certain amount each month and have penalties if you go over the agreed mileage, but rather than you worrying about the crippling baloon payment, the lease company deals with that by taking the car off you and giving you a new one.
Because they buy in bulk, they get discounts so it's cheaper than buying a car on finance.
The down side is that if money gets tight and you can't afford the lease any more, you're carless.

Toby, I am not sure how it may be in the UK, but consumers here get a raw deal with many financial arrangements. In a nutshell, you agree to accept any changes to the service to which you have signed for (eg, a loan or lease) simply by the fact of your continuing to use this service.

Be careful in case this sort of nastiness applies; a typical snag might be an early exit penalty that gets appreciably increased just weeks before a rate rise.

Indeed I have never been keen on finance of any kind but it did seem the only option when I posted. I don't think I will be going there tbh.

Mike, I like the HDi, I know it well

after my escapades with the cambelt and veg oil isn't much cheaper than diesel.

Dude you can get veg oil for just over 1/2 the price of diesel at CostCo.

As far as I'm aware there is no CostCo round these parts. Not that I know of anyway

Im sure if you talk to your friendly local shop owner they would order a few 20Ltr containers for you, even if they add a couple of quid its still a fair amount cheaper. Has anyone been into Bookers? I thought that Makro was cheap!! Still its literally a warehouse with terrible flooring and metal cabinets

had never heard of bookers until just now, checking their web site seems that Bookers do an online order service.

That works out at 70ppl vs the 110ppl that diesel is at the pump round here. Although I thought I saw a similar batch of oil for 65ppl at local CostCo last week, might be imagining things.
