Help with value...

Unread post by speedbird001 »

Hi there...

Hope I am posting this in the correct area, Wasn't sure if It should go in the For Sale area or not....Mods please advise If I am breaking any rules..

I going to sell my 2000W Activa 2.0 Turbo and I am wondering if anybody can help with the the value of the car...

Its that rareish bottle green metalic with 93k miles on the clock, I have owned it for nearly 3 years, Its passed its 2 prior MOTs in my ownership with no issues and is due another in mid November, It has TAX until end of October...

I bought the car in 2006 with 66k...I have done 27k in nearly 3 years

Maintenance I have had done to give you an idea

New mid and rear Exhaust, 13.04.07
Replaced leaking (expensive) LHM pipe, Cambelt and Aux Belt, Aug 08 (ouch)
New Pirrelli front tyres, 24.08.09
New front Pads, 27.02.09
New Dunlop rear tyres, 27.02.09
New Rear Pads and Discs, 14.03.09

There are issues as with any car of this age but they are mainly cosmetic, Wheels are a flaky, theres a few minor scratches but nothing major, the bush on the rear suspension needs replacing (noisy one) and the sunroof is prone to leaking when the car has been left standing for a while but it just needs resealing in...been meaning to do it since I owned the car...

I love this car and the only reason for selling is because I have been offered a far more economical Citroen for a price I cannot refuse and my mileage has jumped considerably in the past 6 months and I need the MPG again :-(

Mileage @ MOTs...
Dec 05, 66100 (Was at dealer for nearly a year)
Nov 06, 66258 (Day I bought the car)
Nov 07, 77468
Nov 08, 83073
Current Mileage, 93500

Any help appreciated...

Many thanks in advance...

Hello Gav,

I paid £585 for my first Activa off ebay in 2005 . 'N' reg without aircon but otherwise a good car. I don't have it any longer.

I paid £400 for my second Activa off ebay in 2008 and I still have it. It's an 'S' reg mk1, but with a few issues and only just recently starting to behave properly.

I'd guess that your W reg mk2 would be looking at £500 to £600 on ebay.
Cheers, Kev

02 plate C5 2.2 Hdi Exclusive SE (now 170k miles 03/21).

Used to have:- Xantia 1.9 TurboD SX. 1996 Blue & 1998 Silver Activa. + 1992 BX TZD Turbo.

Hi Gav.

I see Kev has beaten me to the draw! Welcome to the forum.

Are you really sure you must sell the car!!?

You're welcome to post anything here that mentions Activas and it will do
you no harm advertising the car in this Activa specific section too!

Your car is a desirable late s2 and for some the sunroof is seen as a bonus
rather than a detriment! Certainly worth checking the drain pipes
from the sunroof tray to determine whether this is the source of your leak
problem and rectifying it as this could be a 'put off' with the car.

The s2 Activa is a very low volume RHD registered model with 234 making
it here so the spec/colour/mileage/condition are certainly plus points with
yours.

If you look in the top sticky thread in this Activa area you will see the cars
seen along the way on ebay and auto trader etc with the lads here
discussing their merits/shortfalls but obviously the older ads will be
dropping off with links that no longer work. It should give you an idea
where some values are shown mind.

Service items you don't mention are the cam or clutch replacement if ever -
the hydraulic change for the clutch is kind to the conventional clutch fitment
so good mileages are possible before replacement is necessary - an idea of
the bite and feel on your car may reassure prospective buyers as will news
of a new cam belt.

You are no doubt aware of the red £800 one on ebay and the general
reaction here is the car looks nice but with a few things wrong or tired
on it the price seems a bit ambitious. I guess a real world figure will rest
somewhere between the bottom ebay 400/450/500 mark where nasty
boy racer muppets value the engine at about this level for a donor into
a deathtrap shopping trolley.

Unless you really must - I'd avoid letting the car slipping into the clutches
of these abhorrent individuals by selling through ebay

In truth values are all over the place as I recently bought a late V registered
car with 88k miles and sunroof for £285 BUT it does have a blow on
the exhaust and a small dink in the rear panel beneath the tail light but I
use this as an illustration of how prices seem so random. I've seen top
values around £1000 for exceptional condition cars with very low miles.

Recently there have been cars on ebay going for as little as £125!!!

Ballpark for yours though is 600-1000 dependent on various influences such
as length of MOT/service history and condition apparent from pictures.

Should it end up being an economic decision to break the car, I would be interested in negotiating purchase of the hydraulics - it's a late Series II and would thus suit my purpose very well.

That would leave the drivetrain for "Mugs in Pugs" and leather insides for someone in a cooler country...

All that said and done, it would be nice to see the car live some more in one piece...

Cheers lads....

A very fast and helpfull reply....

Andrew, When you say CAM I assume you mean CAM BELT...This along
with the Aux Belt was replaced last year...The sunroof is an aftermarket version not a Citroen one from new, I am sure it leaks around the seal that bonds it into the roof, Would need popping out and resealing...Its electric though and tilts up and slides back...its a nice extra..

I will advertise it on here in the For Sale section soon I think, If anyones
interested I live close to Newmarket in Suffolk and Ely in Cambridgeshire
so feel free to make an offer....

Feel free to ask questions...I will produce a full list of details for the car mentioning all the bit and bobs I know...

Has the standard Activa (cloth) interior and is very nice condition, there is a couple of holes in the top of the rear door panels where a previous owner screwed in some blinds, and a couple of holes in the front where a phone was i reckon...I hardly notice them...

Will buff her up and take some pics later this week...

I'd be very surprised if the car is better scrapped Adam!!

Why are the items you're specifically after purely from a s2 - are there
sufficient significant differences between the s1 and s2 - bear in mind the
volume of cars being registered as s2's. You'd be better dealing with a
scrappage seller in the UK or France/Germany than pull a good car off
the road for your project?

This car sounds way too good to be scrapped. Its not even 10 years old! I am also surprised at the lack of apparant value that such a rare car commands. It should at least be into 4 figures.

This car isnt far from my parents if anyone wants an inspection i would be more than happy to give a quick look.

Cannot entertain it myself, no funds for a start and 2 cars already, once thats not been used for 3 months and the Activa hasnt moved for 3 weeks.

Nothing seems to be worth anything at the moment - something to do with
nobody wanting to spend any money on anything! Look at the Exclusive
offered elsewhere here which is very desirable but cannot raise a buyer
for £500 and these ebay v6's that can't muster anything more despite being
rarer than an Activa. Yes these cars are automotive Citroen bargains.

OK Paul. The cam reference is cam belt - yes I missed your listing where you
had it done - I read the first bit that mentions the expensive pipe renewal.
Which one was this; was it the active ram return pipe on the front suspension?

It has to be said though, despite a recession the used car market has been very good this year. The profile of these rarer variants needs raising ASAP before they are all gone, i've seen it before and spent time and effort trying on another marque with limited success.

There are differences in the X2 even by year - mostly in the supplementary valving of their Hydractive blocks (it seemed to be just finetuning). Newer parts are usually less worn, too.

Remember I spent over $1050 (£550) restoring the front bumper of my 405. Not "gunna", not "wanna", but just did. Surely it's better I declare my hand (in a community of car enthusiasts) than snipe on Fleabay? Nor am I some toff with money to blow. I shovelled dirt and rocks all day today, for indulgences like the above.

Market values are tragically low for a whole swag of good, fun cars that are the tailend of real motoring - physical connections between pedals and parts, individual wires, decently corrosion-proofed bodies, perky engines and above all, user serviceability. I believe Joni Mitchell alluded to what will inevitably befall our "community"!

Cheers, Adam.

After telling the original poster of this thread an approximate UK market
value I guess I'm a bit shocked to hear the suggestion of scrapping a decent
sounding car when I know it's probably front bumper money in your part of
the world.

I'm not getting at you Adam so you don't need to justify your plans. In fact
I ask as I may be in the onerous position of breaking a 97 Activa soon and
will most probably leave the loom and front subframe although the rear
subframe may get dropped off. Basically the engine is seized and everyone
about this part of the world seems to think they're worth more than the car.

The idea hasn't passed me by - I even considered a V6!!
The big hassle is the gearbox/clutch arrangement as I'd prefer a
manual box.

Guess, the car isn't going anywhere soon if I don't want it too.

We could break the OP's car together? You get the shell, motor and spare box, interior trim and I take the hydraulics and subframe cuts...
