Xantia '96 rear ABS sensor

Guys, Ive just finished crawling about underneath mine as the O/S/R ABS sensor needs replacing....it doesnt look that bad at all to do apart from feeding the wiring up to the loom connector, though i have a plan for that

I managed to get the sensor retaining bolt out without dismantling anything other than just taking the rear wheel off and bending the rear hub protector plate away a tad. the sensor itself seemed less easy to remove though as its a nice tight fit and nothing to lever against to prize it out

My questions are thus..
- Is the only way to remove the sensor, to take the protector plate off and then pull the sensor out?
- If the protector plate does indeed need to come off, can the rear caliper remain in place? Is it bolted to the plate? I couldnt quite tell as it was getting dark and its pretty rusty back there
- How much are the rear protector plates?

By the rear "protector plate" i mean the big disc sized one and not the small kidney shaped one that protects the sensor.

I can see the need to drill out the bolts that hold said plate in place

Take a look at this

That sensor, unless you're quite lucky will have to be hacked out

I think the only reason I had to undo the caliper bolts was to get the sheared protector plate bolts, even then it didn't have to come off completely just hung up with a bit of string.

I didnt quite get the bit when you mentioned getting a grommet back in place.....i didnt see one if im not misunderstanding you.

I figured it would be a drillign bolts out job. The single lower one has almost rounded off

Never mind, im pretty good at drilling bolts out as ive done a few before

Im definately going to nail this job without bottling it and taking it to a garage

I did this irksome task a few months back.

The old sensor will innevitably be totally goosed before during and very much
after removal so bite the bullet, cut the sensor lead so the grommet comes
outwards into the wheelarch and the remains of the other end of the lead can
be theaded into the area behind the spare wheel.

My trick with refitting was the length of string gag where the force of
dragging the grommet through was helped by a long screwdriver to prod
the shoulder correct and into sealed position. I found the best access into
the sensor/subframe grommet area was with the car on full height.

I too had the shield bolts turning and got complacent thinking they were all
coming undone when they sheared!

The remains of the shield were in a
shocking state so 12quid doesn't seem bad from Citroen really!

The grommet is attached to the ABS sensor lead and attaches it to the subframe, just above the top of the trailing arm.

Oh yes i saw that

The backplate is cheap isnt it. I will definately order one before i do the sensor...
