Fan Belt Adjustment Citroen Xantia 1.6 1994

Unread post by alexandra »

Bit of a girly question here (and I am so I can say this!) - I have adjusted fan-belts before but not on the Xantia. Can anyone give me some guidelines or steps - I have not been able to get a copy of a Haynes and really need to fix this before driving to Bristol for the New Year as it is slipping quite badly. Thanks for any quick responses.

Hi Alexandra -
Sure you actually mean the "fan" belt [:I]
- as the fan is directly driven by it's own electric motor - no belt.
I think it's your hydraulic pump belt that's protesting loudly.
This belt must be incredible tight.
Not because I doubt you'd be able to tighten it - but it's not like any other belt - so I think you should seek assistance at a garage. They would also instantly be able to advice if the belt needs replacing due to the prolonged slipping.
Does NOT have to be a Citroen garage - and wo'nt cost you an arm & leg.
On the other hand it's really important to have it done ASAP - to avoid possible gross failure on your car.

Alexandra,
If you look under the wheel arxh on the drivers side, you will see the alternator, look carefully and you will see a slide type guide with an allen key fitting on the end. Release the alternator mounts slightly and then tighten the allen key bolt, you sholud only have about 5mm of play on this belt, re tighten the mounting bolts and then you should be okay.
Paul.

Thankyou AndersDK and Wrinklet1 for the answers....
ok so no fan belt!!: two things learnt
i - its a engine-crank pulley to alternator-pulley belt.
ii- I would never have guessed to look under the wheel arch for the adjustor.
Thank-you both. I will let you know if all goes well or I end up at my local sympathetic garage (If they are open!!) - if not does anyone have a citroen I can borrow!! happy new year to you both.
