205Gti Clutches

Post by nathan_marriott »

Does any one know if the 205Diesel/Turbo Diesel friction plate, fits into a 1.6 Gti??
I know that ill have keep the Gti release bearing and coverplate but just wanted to know if it fitted.
It'd be better for rallying than a standard clutch coz diesels have more torque!!

I am sure you will have to check the diameter of the friction plate in relation to the pressure plate of the original. Also the splines in the centre of the drive plate to make sure they fit on the first motion shaft of the gear box.
You could check the part numbers in the catalogue to see if they are similar. I am sure they are the same clutch assembly as the engines have the same power and torque rating.
Many years ago when I was working in the agricultural engineering trade, we used to fit 11" turbo driven plates which hade a ceramic wear plates as a heavy duty plate to tractors with loader attachments.

I strongly recommend a 215mm 405Mi16/BX16v clutch AND flywheel.

If you are changing the flywheel to the one of a 1.9l engine from a 1.6l, would this not upset the balance between crankshaft and flywheel? Also a larger bellhousing would seem apropriate to house the increased clutch assembly?

the bellhousing is the same for 1.6/1.9/1.916v, they all use either be1 or be3 boxes, and the only clutch difference is the release bearing.
I know several people who have carried out this mod to 205 turbo technics conversions with no balancing issues. But its worth consdidering having the flywheel lightened and balanced anyway, the 16v flywheel can be lightened considerably without loosing any strength when used with the 8v because the timing ring gear can be removed as the 8v jetronic management doesn't use it.

Am I correct in thinking there was a modified clutch assembly on the 405/306 fitted around 1993? I think this is described as the pull type (Haynes peugeot diesel manual from 1996 on).

- pushtype (what the 205/309/405Mi16 have)
This type of clutch pushes the clutch releasebearing to the clutchcover thereby releasing the clutch plate. The clutchcover and bearing are not connected to eachother.
- pulltype (306/406, late model 405Mi16)
This clutch type pulls the releasebearing (and the attached clutchcover) from the clutchplate, thereby releasing the gearbox from the engine.
