Well the report is back in and it looks like the crank has taken a tiny amount of wear. at the worst section its taken a hit of 2thou :( They think it will repair with a set of bearing shells and new oil and filter, total £150 for the work. But they said there is a chance it wont work.

Also said its about 1-2days for an engine swap from another vehicle, taking it out of another shell and dropping the original out and the other one in.

Also weren't sure if there were any diffs between one fitted to a Mark1 Activa and a Mark2 Activa either though i dont think there is.

So far if i won the car at its current price on ebay and shipped it down it would cost me near £400 just for that bit then another £350 for the engine swap.... :( fingers crossed the reshell will work and last for a little while, specially if i can keep to my 5k oil servicing that was meant to happen next week!

Find this all very strange, the engine was a gem imho, it didnt knock in the slightest when i had it. I can only think that the bearings got hot when the engine overheated and ran a couple of them out. This is a rare occurance in all honesty, i've had a couple of engines lose water in the past and they always survive.

I know Gareth, my R5 and R19 ran hot once or twice from exploding some old hoses apart or blowing the HG but the bottom ends were always good after.

I think it's been due to me running it low on oil and not checking the dipstick correctly. Warning to anyone who buys the new dipstick to check both sides of the stick not just one side as one seems to wipe up the dipstick tube as you pull it out :(

This I'm sure is why the warning lights were coming on as oil pressure was dropping as the pump couldn't pick up enough oil..

Oh dear Will, that's such a shame  I know all about the two sides of the dipstick right back to my 205GTi days and it does confuse.

What is odd though is that even if the engine was run consistently below the min mark, it should have been Ok but I guess being an Activa and you enjoying the cornering, you will have suffered oil surge where the oil pickup gets uncovered on long, fast bends...

It needs a baffled sump.

I don't want to add to your pain but the old Mi16 engine suffers surge on long fast corners and oil starvation in those often seems to lead to the mains going as well; a spun main not being an unusual happening  Even if you have the big ends done, the mains may come back to bite you later...

Oh well.

Replaced the bearings and there is still a bit of a knock :(

Choice is to try and get another engine maybe and drop that in or call it quits with the car and bring it home for breaking :(

They are pricing up pulling the engine from a donor and dropping it into the car instead for me but i reckon thats going to be around £200 plus £150 for the original car to break and then same again to ship the car to me.....

I'm not too surprised at the garage not measuring the oil - even in relative terms.

Disappointed though - it shows how they really think about jobs - no preemptive analytical skills. Garages like this, often cost the customer more because they don't look at all the causative agents before launching in.

In a nutshell, you are risking doing your dough with them...

If i had the space and the time to do it i would go for it :-)

Possibly even the turbo or supercharger conversion as well but with trying to sell the house, my work and Rachels the way they are at the minute i cant afford to be stripping one car engine out on the front lawn and trying to drop another one in. plus engine cranes dont move very well on the loose stone drive we have :(
