Grinding noise..

Unread post by Brigsygtt »

My xantia has developed a grinding noise on the drivetrain at low rpm. It appears to be coming from o/s front, off beat grind/grind noise per revolution not constant.

The noise silences when the clutch is dipped, taking load off the transmission. Doesn't alter with steering as per usual wheelbearing noise, its purely load related. When up to speed/higher rpm it disappears.

Ive not had chance to check for play in wheelbearings yet but there was none when it went for mot a couple of weeks back.

Is this pointing towards the box, i.e diff bearings or am i overlooking the obvious? The box has been noisy for a while, usual whine from high mileage...

The only other thing that has crossed my mind is the o/s shaft, intermediate bearing worn? the inner cv is quite worn causing wobble.

O/S drive shaft centre bearing is likely to be your problem.

the front wheel bearings dont offten show any play unless they are completly shot, as the hub nut keeps it all up together

Sorted, removed the driveshaft & the intermediate bearing has at least 3-4mm of play in it, metal to metal. I bit the bullet & bought an amk re-con driveshaft & no more nasty noises.

All the noise i associated with the box has now gone so that's a bonus.
