Another of my xantias quirks...

Unread post by KP »

Over the last few days i've noticed on a certain roundabout on my journey to work that i can keep a fair amount of momentum up going round it due to the grip offered on its surface as well as the slight camber and the good old ARCS :D however keeping the momentum up causes a side affect i don't experience anywhere else with the car :(

The warning lights, stop, (!) and the red one to the right of STOP(cant recall what it is) but the steering then gets a little heavier than normal, its kind of like the alt belt has stopped spinning or isnt tight enough so the cornering force makes it spin over a high resistance roller, the HP pump one maybe?
I'll try and check it quickly if i get a chance before i shoot across the hills today but any other ideas anyone??

Happens on mine, LHM is a bit low.
The float sticks on mine so had given the impression that it's got plenty of LHM when actually it's just under the lower line.

If it looks ok, add some LHM and make sure the float moves up.

Mine gets heavy in some circumstances, feels like there isnt enough pressure in reserve? You do have to be quite brutal in changing direction to make it do it though.

Could someone cross these remarks with what Martin at Pleiades has suggested in the past?

IIRC, he reckoned that a prolonged spell on a flat accumulator could roger the regulated cut-in and cut-out settings. Without the gear to test it, I realise it's conjecture - but it would potentially give the results people are reporting...

Cheers, Adam.

Its quite possible as when i bought the car the previous owner must have driven around with the accum flat for a while(not Gareth BTW) so it could be this. Is there anyway to reset it or adjust it at all or does it mean that hydraulic bits have to come off?

Like i said its only one roundabout and i dont do it flat out, enough for the tyres to squeek a bit(they are cheapy things at the front though) but not enough for traction loss or such like.

Normally you would exchange the regulator for a fully serviced unit, or chance a brand newie from Citroën.

If you knew exactly what you were doing and had a set of hydraulic pressure gauges, it might be possible to adjust your own.

Hi gents you can adjust it yourself, you just need to put a pressure guage capable of taking about 190bar min on the outlet from the reg to see at what pressure it cuts in and out at, it should cut in at 145bar and out at 170bar, you can adjust it by adding shims to the spring under the plastic cap at the bottom of the regulator iirc, the shims are available from cit.
It was Jorgy9 on the old CXM forum who done it with a good write up too but that forum is sort of dead atm

I would suggest you also check your engine oil. On some cars if you give it some beans on a corner, oil can be forced to one side of the engine leaving the pickup tube out of the oil. Have had that on several cars, BX14RE, BX19TD to name 2.

More likely though is your LHM system going 'low pressure' I would say. Look at your front Activa ram sphere & accumulator sphere; if they are good, your hydraulic pump.

The theory...
A standard sphere lasts about 2 years, an Activa ram sphere I believe acts as a second accumulator sphere, in effect making you accumulator sphere twice as big, when this goes flat the rams takes it's feed from the accumulator sphere (& pump). Chances are it has never been changed & a flat sphere could go undetected. A sphere is aprox 400cc (can displace aprox 400cc of fluid or less but you get the gist), if you look at the size of the rams in comparison, at full reach the ram will drain a lot of fluid. A hard left, quickly followed by a hard right, as is often the case on a roundabout, could easily exhaust a weak or flat sphere(s).

that sounds quite possible as the front accumulator was a dodo when i got the car so its possibly been trying to use the front activa sphere to help the rest of the system out and killed it off as well. guess you cant get these spheres from anywhere but citroen :(

Ah well thanks guys for helping out on this one :-)

GSF appear to now do Activa spheres for £20-25

They only do the rear outers IIRC and not fronts or rams yet :(

Can't get an exchange set from Pleiades, that are regassed? IIRC the two Activa extra spheres are without metering orifices, so they may be substituted with standard accumulators regassed to a different pressure.

p.s. A quick check of Xantia World's website suggests the front Activa sphere is the same volume/pressure as a regular accumulator sphere. Back is half the pressure, same volume.

The Activa sphere to feed the rams are £91 each, I asked when I was in my local Citroen dealer the other day, think mines abit flat to.

From the research I've done I belive you can subsitute the front sphere with a acumulator sphere £25 ish from GSF, they are also 400cc 62 bar & undamped. This is what I intend to do with mine when I get around to it. I don't think my pump's fantastic either, it takes along time for the STOP light to go out when you first start up & when doing fast lock-to-lock when parking I loose power stearing.
