Xantia V6 HP pump leak fix without removing pump?

Post by Sid_the_Squid »

Hi all,
Ive had a squeak noise from my V6 since purchase, it started to annoy me, in the recent hot weather, as its loud with the AC on.
I've discovered what I believe to be the cause of the squeak, an LHM leak from one of the hex bolts on the hp pump, this leak is dripping on the alternator and the ac compressor, which is making its way onto the aux belt.

I've searched a few threads here about this problem, I've got some of the correct replacement seals from Citroen, was all ready to change the seal this morning, but was stumped at how to undo the bolt, I cant seem to get a spanner or socket on as the alternator is in the way!

For those of you with V6's its the bottom visible hex bolt thats leaking, positioned just above the alternator, I can clearly see it, and see the leak, but cant think of a way to get to it. Is it possible to do this seal with the pump in situ, if not I'll have to refer to a garage, as I don't feel comfortable with removing the pump on my own.

Which brings me to another question, anyone have a garage recommendation around south herts area, my usual guy is on holiday for 3 weeks.

Thanks

Is it the bolt that holds the high pressure output pipe? If it is then it is possible to do it in situ as I have done it myself as I had the same leak problem. You will need to loosen all the pipe clamps along the front of the engine though to get enough free play to move it out of the way.

No sadly its the bottom hex bolt, I've got a image but my brain is a bit to fuzzy to attempt to post it up right now.

No one got any advice on garages?

I know the one you mean Sid. Firstly thopugh, do check this is not just the LHM dripping from the lowest point of the pump disguising its real source.

It may well still be the O ring under the delivery pipe big hex nearest the pulley. Watch it with the engine running and see if you can see a spot of LHM "breathing" around the hex threads as the pressure regulator cuts in and out.

If that is the case, it's not a bad job, as Stempy says, to replace the O ring. It's just a tad messy, that's all.

If the pump is leaking from anywhere else, it'll have to come off and in finest V6 tradition it will but not 100% easily. I'd not try to replace any other O rings in-situ as those hex plugs have things behind them.

If you are not happy to do it, take a run up the A1 to Eaton Socon and see Martin at Pleiades. He is far and away my best recommendation for pump issues like this.

Interestingly I had a look at the Citroen Service site and you can see the hex bolt in question but it doesn't show an O ring for that position :?

Stempy, thats is indeed the one I think is leaking, as the top bolt looks fairly dry, I too noticed the apparent lack of seal, but assumed there must be a 'type 5' seal there also, what else could they use :?:

Now its stopped raining, I'll check see if maybe I'm mistaken and its leaking else where.

Thanks for the recommendation Jim, thats going to be plan B however as its a bit of a drive away. I've found 3 Citroen 'specialist' garages local to me which I have not already tried, We'll see how it works out with them, I like to have a chat with garages before I consider handing over my precious xantias.

*Edit*
Just had another look, its definitely not the top hex, nor the in or out pipes, its either that bottom one or something at the back of the pump. :(

Sid,

be careful you speak carefully to whoever you have to do the job as they may say the pump needs to be replaced to fix this. The issue here is that the pump is unique to the V6 and is eyewateringly expensive

At least Martin (Pleiades) will make every effort to repair it.

Thanks for the heads up Jim, I was unaware of the uniqueness of this pump, in my ignorance I assumed it would be the same as one of the other mk2 Xantia pumps, I had a pump replaced on my mk1 1.9D only cost £125. mind you thats going back about 5 years.

Aarghhhh  Thats pricey, way over my current budget for fixing this.

Well phoned Pleiades, spoke to Paul as Martin was not in, upshot is they would definatly be able to fix the pump if I could get it to them, but they can't yet remove or refit the pump as their not in the new garage till the 1st July.

So I'm still a bit stuck, as removing and refitting the pump is the part which is bothering me, guess I'll have to get some quotes locally or wait until eairly July.

Thanks for your help Jim and Stempy

It's a shame you did not ask this question a week or so back Sid, when I had my V6 engine resting on the garage floor and the pump all exposed :(

I hoped I'd taken some pictures showing the pump mounts but none of those either :(

However, apart from the lack of access, I reckon the pump will not be too hard to remove. I expect the secret will lie in the removal of the pulley, which is secured to a small hub by four 10mm bolts, and I reckon on removal, you'll have good (by V6 standards) access to the through bolts that secure the pump to its carrier.

I'll have a close look at mine later and see if I can see the best way to remove it but in the finest V6 tradition, I expect it will be relatively OK despite looking practically impossible :)

Unfortunately it happened while I was away from home so I told my wife to take it to the garage and get it fixed, mind you, the pump itself was almost £500 if I remember correctly.
