Xantia wont rise at rear

Hi All, my son has a 96 TD Xantia, the rear end was getting very lazy to rise to normal height. I thought it needed new sheres (?) but as with all youngsters he needed it that night.
So my mate had some off of his Activa, not knowing which end etc, I thought I had nothing to loose and fitted them.
Now it stays down for ever, I dont know but I would have thought , although they might not work properly, that they would work sort of.
Any ideas? Or are sheres so different, I am happy to put "propr" ones on, but tried these to get him mobile that night.
