No, just fingers. Release the rod from the wishbone and bushes and then manipulate the rod so the cup is pulled over to the very edge of the ball and then give it a sharp push to roll the cup further off the ball. The cup will then pop off the ball easily. This is very hard to describe

I finally got around to changing the parts today. Thanks again for the advice. One thing I noticed was that the new control rods didn't come with those rubber/foam seals that are supposed to keep dirt away from the ball link. I used the ones from the old rods, although they aren't that tight anymore. The ball links didn't seem to have worn at all though, so I guess it's not an issue.

The old pads had worn shapeless, and the rods were quite thin where the pads clamp around them. I'd say that the rods had gone through a few pair of pads in their lifetime. I think I will be cleaning the pads every now and then, and replace them at the first sight of wear... they're cheap, and rather easy to change, atleast compared to the control rods.

And what a difference in ride. I thought that the handling had been pretty impressive, but now it's really beyond belief.

There must be a technique

Make sure there's not too much grease in the ball socket. Too much and it'll hydraulically lock and you'll never get it to pop home. It only needs a light smear.

Those seals are metal to metal Mike and being the same metal, should not be subject to dissimilar metal corrosion issues.

Which end is leaking?

All I can suggest is that for a quick fix you take the pipe right off and give it all a good clean-up and reassemble. A bit of PTFRE tape on the thread maybe for a quick fix?

I'm thinking the leak may actually be from the flexible part of the pipe where it is crimped onto the metal feurrles at each end. I've seen the rubber pipes going to the front strut tops weep at the junction where the rubber pipe joins metal pipe on hydractive cars. Give the pipe a really good clean and observe very carefully. It's surprising how LHM can "creep".

Pleased the balljoints are OK now. As long as they have a hint of grease in the cup, they'll be fine.

Yes, certainly a high pressure pipe! Full system pressure there..

Best to swap it for your spare. Still, it's good news the ram itself is OK

I tend to find the rods are adjusted more or less correctly when the ball-ends of the rods are both pointing dead vertically up and the car rides level. If one (or both) are leaning then it's not quite right even though the car may be riding level. It's important to equalise out any adjustments you might make on both adjusters (items 3 of fig3 on the linked document) so that they remain equal.

Either red or silver in my experience.

It was another reason why I was keen to buy this one when it came up some years ago (despite the many, many problems it had) ...

Hopefully one of the CXs next year - it's been FAR FAR too long since I was behind the wheel of one of them on the road. My gf's really keen on that idea too (yes, really!!!)

Well good luck with the projects when you get around to doing them - as you know it'll be worth it after the work. Series 1 GTi Turbos aren't exactly commonplace nowadays so it would be great if another one (or two!) return to the road - also the Series 2 GTi Turbo as well.

Pics would be great to see, out of interest what colour/s and spec are they?
