Rear Ram wear in top Ball Joint

Unread post by KevMayer »

Today I've had the rear ram off to check for an LHM leak. Sure enough, the leak is from the low pressure leak off pipe. So, I put some Orange Hermatite Silicon sealant around it.

But, I was alarmed to feel loads of play at the top end of the ram where it bolts to the anti roll bar.

I stripped the gaiter off and there is a ball joint. Unfortunately this one has lots of play in it. Thinking about it, the play in this ball joint is probably the reason I get a clunk as I accelerate hard or go over a speed hump.

There is some play in the bush at the bottom end, but not as much as I expected.

So, could this ball joint be the source of the clunking rear suspension on Activas ?

A new rear ram will be my only option.
Cheers, Kev

Gosh, that's unusual Kev :(

Is the gaiter intact at the top?

Sadly, yes, the only answer is a new ram but looking on the bright side, at least you'll get a new lower bush with it...

The gaiter is ok. It can be persuaded to slide off in one piece.

I've put the ram back on for now. There's a lot of play in the ball joint but it is quite a solid construction. It's a metal ball retained by a sturdy metal cup/housing. It doesn't look like it will part company in the near future. There doesn't appear to be any rubber involved (unless its all broken up and that's why I have so much play ?).

The ball joint is actually threaded on to the end of the ram. There are flats on the shaft end and the ball joint has a big hexagon (maybe 24 mm). Maybe you can get the ball joint as a separate item and change it yourself. Just like a normal ball joint/track rod end.

I knew I should have taken a photo...damn

If the gaiter just prises off without any damage I have a spare ram I can
take piccies of to help explore repairing possibilities. I've an idea Handyman
has looked into restoring Activa rams and is on the lookout for old duff rams
to experiment with and/or repair.

If whole running and legal Activas are currently going on ebay for £200 it's
a hard job justifying over £200 for a new rear ram bush or even a complete
rear ram from Mr Citroen. Remember, it's the rear's where there are two RP
numbers with a cheaper one being the older number.
