Not tried the chips but I had a remap done. Cost 100 euros plus the price of the tool.

Very effective.

The difference in real terms....?

Seems from observation that the add-on box leaves one with the option of easily reverting to standard. Does the re-map achieve more?

PS: Mine's a 90bhp HDi - no intercooler... more grunt and economy is the main criterium, not BHP.

I had a tuning box (psi tuning box) on my 90bhp Xsara and the difference was really noticeable. I would have prefered a remap as they are a bit more graceful ie they can be made to suit your engine and therefore give you the extra power without loads of smoke.
My psi box produced loads of power but it did smoke a bit.

I got a remap done a couple of years ago ( xsara 110HDI with the intercooler), and it gave a bit more overall oomph which was nice, but also dropped the point at which the turbo kicks in from around 2200rpm to around 1800rpm, which was brilliant (and in my opinion transformed the car). Not sure re economy changes, but was told this would improve a little if driven sensibly :)

I was given a copy of the original map on a cd, so you could get it put back to original spec in the future if you wanted. I felt happier going with the remap as it is not an 'obvious' mod, and it is changing the various operating parameters at source rather than introducing false feedback into the ecu to fool one element of its programming!

Jamie from sp-tuning came up from Leicester to do mine, would highly recommend him. Cost me just over £200 I think. ISTR the remaps he does are from a German firm. Check him out on Ebay!

They do say a remap is better but also a lot dearer.Plus a chip can always be taken off and sold.steelcityuk where did you get a remap for 100 euro's.The chip i have made no difference to any smoke out the back.

Den169,
What chip did you have? I had this system http://www.psipowerbox.com/turbodiesel/ ... d=81&lg=en
I originally got the box from my fathers car, as it was fitted to his xantia on purchase. When I first fitted the box to my car I didn't really feel much difference however, after changing the settings to max it transformed the car at the expense of some smoke.

I think the PSI box is expensive to buy and it would be comparable to a remap.

LOl there is one here on ebay: Item number: 220360882423

Howie

Jamie from SP did the remap on my Xsara too, and I agree completely with your comments, it does transform the car and was well worth the money.

There is a guy near Uxbridge that does custom remaps, he is doing my Transit van, but does all makes and models, not just vans.

He is top notch and because your getting a custom map to match your vehicle its much better than off the shelf.

A extra 25bhp, 50nm and 5-6mpg more on fuel is claimed and from his feedback i dont doubt it.

The difference in real terms is a power increase without any increase in smoke. If the tuning box just plugs into the fuel rail then basically it's just fooling the ECU into thinking that the fuel rail is under pressurised so either the ECU ups the pressure or opens the injectors longer, hence more power and to some extent more smoke. With a re-map the injection timing can be advanced, more fuel injected and the turbo boost increased slightly to clean the exhaust up. That said if an idiot alters the map it can easily wreck the engine or spoil the driveability.

If I want to revert to normal power I connect up the tool I bought and flash back the original map. Considering that the tool and the map cost less than 140 Euros I'd say it was a good buy. The tool can be used with lots of other vehicles so I can download their maps have them tweaked and upload them.

If you find the right tuner he can produce a map for efficiency rather than power, that's the beauty of a re-map. A bit like the difference in off the peg and made to measure. Personally I'd steer well clear of of the discs on Ebay that offer countless maps for a small sum.

If you want to delve deeper into the subject then this is a good site - http://www.chiptuners.org/. Gunnar of that site did my re-map. Unless the original map taken off the car is modified you don't know for sure that the map will work with the car correctly and if it does has the immobiliser function been removed?
