2 simple questions maybe
If you have sufficient help when re-fitting the box can you get away with leaving Rh drive shaft in place?
also
Does anyone have a photo or sketch of Malcolm's patented
engine /gear box support beem

Yes you can, so long as you split the lower balljoint and drive the intermediate bearing out of its housing so the shaft can clear the box with a bit to spare.bxman wrote: If you have sufficient help when re-fitting the box can you get away with leaving Rh drive shaft in place?
Often you can get away with leaving the LH driveshaft in place too although it does help to remove it completely.
With help, you don't need a support beam. Have one helper lying underneath holding the gearbox up whilst another leans over the wing and cradles the 'box. One pushing up and another guiding in makes the job easy enough. To ave squashing the under-helper, loosely suspend the gearbox from an engine crane.
With his beam though, I believe Malcolm can do them single-handed.

Hmmmmm Xantia clutch changes...
DOES NOT require a gearbox removal I have found... with the aid of TWO trolly jacks REMOVING BOTH drive shafts help very much...
If you take the box away from the engine I have found you can rest the bottom of the bellhouse on the trolly jack and the 5th gear house on the subframe... this DOES leave JUST enough room to remove the clutch plate bolts and swap it all over.. I have an OLD input shaft cut off a gearbox to aline the friction plate up before tightening the bolts back up... theres then NO need to line the friction plate up by eye - which I find doesn't work..
Done a good few like this now and saves 2 bodies, and also dropping the box to the floor and then finding it DAMM heavy to lift back up...

The rt hand shaft will be removed before the gearbox goes back.
I think there must be a lot more room on the Mk1
I had a box out of one of those (1.9 NA d/ be3) It came out so easy,
I was tempted into saving the work. It has not paid off for me on this occasion ,
however if you do not try you do not know
I am sure Paul's method is worth a try.

if you remove the box before pulling out the O/S drive shaft you will almost certainly bend the inboard section of the shaft, i have seen this before,
