Head Unit Cover

Unread post by ACTIVE8 »

This picture shows a cover for the double din head unit in an Xantia Activa, this is a car to French specifications.

Image

Is this a component that was fitted to U.K. spec cars at all?

I think I have seen this before on a U.K. spec BX.

No as I believe all Xantia's were fitted with a radio from new (certainly Activa's), the only ones that may not have been were S2 'X' trim level models.

Therefore is it possible to fit this part to the standard fit double din, if one could get hold of it?

The 405 had a radio cover.
There used to be a readily available replacement facia with flap for standard radios.
Unfortunately they seem to be like hens teeth, as everyone is producing a simpler (and therefore cheaper) radio surround with no flap.

I must say that the point of these covers is lost on me as its quite obvious to any scrote that there's a radio behind the flap :?

My last 405 had a radio cover, operated by a big button with a musical note on it :D

When they were little, it kept the kids occupied on long trips pushing the button and seeing the cover pop up

About the only value of it...

I've seen them quite a few times on wierdo spec Irish market Xantias, combined with a Mk1 Saxo-type CD player or tape deck like this one:

I'd like one too, only because my Autoleads fascia doesn't fit right in my 93 Xantia. From what I remember they're hideously expensive...

This facia cover is fitted to all late Forte model Xantias, and may well be on other trim levels. Our 'X' plate estate has it and I have seen it on other Xantias.

Should not think it difficult to strip out the facia and its supporting trim. You just need to make sure it has the clearance for the slot under the radio/CD player. Do not remember a knob or button on our one, all you do is touch it and off it goes.....!

I suppose its a good idea to make the toe-rags, who break into cars, to think twice. If they cannot readily see the radio, they may well move on to easier pickings. I donot think you can make the assumption that they already know what is under the flap.

Strange, I had a W reg 1.8 Forte with the normal Clarion - no cover...

Yes, but the stealth cover should not have a musical note on it, to point out to the "toe-rags" where the head unit still might be.

This surely defeats the purpose of the cover, by highlighting what it does!

Hi Activa8, ours has got nuffin' on it, its completely blank, close fitting and I assume came with the car. Maybe it was an option, but a very common one! :P None of my other Xantias have got it fitted and their trim level was certainly higher than a Forte.

Ross, your W plated Xantia was too early.

Statistics prove otherwise I'm afraid, thieves are a pain but they know what car is fitted with what as its their "trade" , I recall a while ago that the only Clio's being broken into for their radio's were lower end models as the more expensive model radios' had Clio specific connection sockets.

Why for example do thieves break into cars with the tell all circle on the windscreen even though the sat nav is no longer there?

For the time being i'm happy with the standard head unit in my Activa but i am looking to upgrade soon to a more powerful modern unit with proper ipod connectivity. I'd much rather remove the fascia panel every time i park up that cover it up with a flap, as a theif may try his luck and get lucky...

Have you thought of getting an FM Transmitter for your ipod? or a phone that supports this feature such as Nokia N85? Lets you keep the original head unit, just tune it into what ever FM fequency your ipod, or phone is broadcasting on. Then you get to keep the Steering Wheel controls, and it does not look a mess. I put a Pioneer one in my first Xantia years ago, it did not look right, plus the adaptor did not work that was suppost to work with the steering wheel controls. :(
