306 stiff steering!

Hi!
My wife's power steering has gone rather stiff (intermittently) on her 2000 306 Estate. I was just wondering if this is a common problem and is it likely to be dry sticking joints? (no leaks and fluid level is OK!)

if its got an electric power steering pump it could be packing up, the saxo have one and i have known them to fail

just check all the plugs and conections before discarding it though
