Crankshaft pulley bolt

Unread post by lazza »

HI

I am having probs getting the Crankshaft pulley bolt of the Auxiliary drive belt off.

I need to change it because, it looked wonkey when it was running so, it seems sensisble to change it now, whilst my car is in pieces.

My 3 questions are:

1. My fuel pump is still off (finally got the 10.9 steel replacement screw today for the distributor head from a Bosch supplier ... after a tour of every ironmonger!). Does it make sense to put the pump back on before trying to take off the crankshaft pulley bolt, in case the crankshaft turns???

2. Haynes manual says to put the car in top gear, but surely it makes more sense to put it in 1st or reverse??

3. Haynes manual says get a friend to push the brakes, but as i dont have a friend  .. surely as the handbrake operates on the front wheels, then I could just apply the handbrake???

Thanks for anwers to these questions

cheers

Hi Larry,

I'd not even attempt to undo the crank bolt with the pump off. However, once back on, you have these options:

Warm up the engine as this expands things a bit and slightly softens an Loctite on the bolt.

5th gear, handbrake hard-on and try to undo it with a breaker bar.

If that does not succeed, use the starter motor. In neutral. disconnect the stop solenoid so the engine cannot fire and then jam a good, hefty 22mm socket on a good hefty T bar between the bolt head and under the wishbone. Make sure it cannot fly off and cause injury.

Very, very briefly spin the starter, just "blip" it. This will surely start the bolt on it's way. It sounds brutal but is perfectly safe. I have employed it many times. If it does not "give" on the first "blip" try another. The maximum I've ever needed is three.

If that does not sound like something you want to do, go to a garage with a big "Rattle Gun" (air wrench like tyre depots use on wheel nuts) and ask them kindly to loosen it for you.

As I say, do not risk this with the pump off.

With the hand brake on, also refit some or all of the wheel nuts so that the brake disc is held fast (otherwise it's only held on by two small screws!).

Thanks guys

Well looks like a job for when i've got the car running again. I´ll put the auxiliary drive belt back on and "bite the bolt", and get on with reinstalling my fuel pump.

A PERFECT WAY! Works every time.. The start has more strength then any of us. I do it every time... I wouldn't even put the AUX belt back on, your just giving yourself more work.

So get your pump back together make sure she runs, then as per citrojim. Just flick the starter, you only need to crack the loctite.. THEN once youve done that, LOCK the engine back up on the Timing bolts (Crank, cam and pump) you can then ratchet the bolt off and the engine is locked in place to stop it turning over while you undo the bolt.

if you have the pump off why are you/fitting the AUX drive belt, as the cam belt goes on behind it, and as every one has said dont try losening or removeing the cranck pully bolt with the cam belt of, because if you unintentionaly spin the crack you could bend vavles
