I think that if your like me, 9 times out of 10, something goes wrong with your car, you did not expect it, and you need the car back on the road first thing in the morning to get kids to school, put the wife in a shop etc.. ( I am glad I dont have kids or wives
in these situations, it's hard to justify time needed to source parts and make a tool to help, even worse if you have no garage/vice/ cant use power tools in the evening etc...
Then, you find 'another way' of doing job, and with some! care, have achieved the same result in a few minutes with out damage to you, your tools or the car
on the flip side.. the satisfaction of creating a one-off tool using scraps you had lying around (will keep that thing in case it's useful in the future!) and doing the job 'properly' by the book.. and having the tool go in a 'special tools' drawer for the future is very nice , especially if your ever going to work on your car or someone else's again
I have not made many, but one that was very easy and satisfying to use, helped me remove the innards from a kawasaki front fork... I still have it but have never used it since
anyway
not really sure why I mentioned all that, quiet at work
