hand cleaner

Unread post by jgra1 »

chaps, a friend swears by swarfega..

I swear at it

in the garage I worked in as a kid, commer manista was the ONLY option.. yellow with beads, I think tuffanega is probably as good..

Have tried marg and salt a few times

Swarfega has always struck me as something to get rid of soil, grass, dust etc..

I do try and wear surgical gloves where possibly, annoying as they can be..

any thoughts? what do yo use..

Inspection gloves for me too, can get several hundred in a box for a tenner or so.
If I don't have swarfega orange, sugar and washing up liquid works well.

I was brought up to use swarfega but I now swear by manista. The stuff can even disolve pen ink, I discovered.

I do generally use latex gloves but if I were working in a garage, I'd apply barrier cream first.

Nothing beats BMW's brand of hand cleaner, it makes Manista look silly. It never failed to get my hands clean. Not sure of the best way to go about getting it though!

The ultimate hand cleaner for the ultimte driving machine perhaps?

Funnily enough, I was reading an old copy of Autocar in the doctor's waiting room today and they touched on the same subject with the conclusion that margerine was unbeatable and much better than my favourite, good old green Swarfega...

So, is there any basis in fact that Marge works and if so, which is best, Stork or Tesco Value?

I tend to use sugar and washing up liquid too. I've never heard of margarine being used, I'll try it next time. The trouble with marge is the number of places you would leave handprints trying to get it, I can usually get to the sugar without making too much mess.

I only like it because I get it for free John

I hate the orange, gritty stuff. Not nice on my delicate little girly hands at all :x

I worked for some time in the prining industry, and we more or less settled on Manista too.

There's a range useful products which are used like a barrier cream, but form an actual physical barrier over the skin, allowing any contaminationto be rinsed straight off without any special cleanser.

Don't forget the old trick of working ordinary soap (undiluted) under the fingernails to prevent grime collecting there.

A supplies rep once told me about a hand cleaner which contained a small proportion of white spirit. In accordance with COSHH regulations, the containers carried the statutory warning 'Avoid contact with skin' :D

I use washing up liquid as a barrier (finger nails, cracks and crevices etc) and after getting mucky.. washing up liquid and a spoonfull of sugar worked well in and rinsed off with warm water always seems to do the trick.

Manista is by far and away vastly superior to Swarfega; problem is,
I can't find anyone that sells it about the place these days and Halfords
seems to have a deal going with Swarfega. Gloves are OK, but they
don't always stop your arms and elbows getting all oily!

If I have some lying about I'll use petrol

I then wash my hands with soap and water throughly to make sure I don't become a fire wielding beast
