Oily TD Engine

There is a bit of oil dropping down from the back of my 1.9 TD engine, appears to be up near the manifold but not sure !. Its not much - infact I never have to top up the oil, it just looks messy underneath. Anything that leaks up and around that area that is a diy fix ? . Engine has 208 K on it so I suppose its not too bad !

hi Brian, myself and MikeT have this problem at moment..

he has a write up in the blogs section, and I have my blog (below)

it seems a lot of us suffer oily TD's.. mine was bad enough that I covered the GF's gravel drive in the stuff, and had to keep putting cardboard under the car every day.. annoying..

its possible that your leak may be something simple around the front.. which finds it's way around the back and down, over time

Mine's leaking from the breather hose on the rocker cover where it's split.
Must get a new one

Most likely cause (especially if it's a lot or getting worse) is a HG leak behind the Inj pump - internal oil feed to the camshaft. Not easy to identify - head off and skim - well worth the while - 208K is not OTT; two of ours have well over this with NO discernible bore wear.

BrianM Although not confirmed, I suspect my oil leak was from the cam cover. It may have been from the head gasket but oil has covered the top of the exhaust manifold and halfway up the inlet manifold runners too (see my blog for pictures). Sorry to hijack this thread but...

jgra1 Are you saying what I think you're saying?

I've been following your blog and note you broke a cap in refitting? How did that happen?

thanks for following the blog! hope it's of use... (even for pitfalls)!

I had so many reasons to remove my engine really... to be honest, even now I dont really know where the leak/leaks were from.. but with a clean lump and a better idea of how its put together, and knowing 'suspect' areas of leakage, I will soon know where it's from if it returns

Cam cap.. not a clue... really ... I think my spare is a good fit, I can detect no movement but also it's not tight so may have been lucky..

At the time as I was tightening, I assumed the valves under it were causing the resistance.. but when I finally put it all back together with the spare cam cap, it was much easier, like how tigthening on a valve spring would feel..

really dont know... a burr catching, or just the cap slightly off square maybe...

bloody rain coming tonight but plenty to do , will update blog when I break the wine open at about 10

I thought we repaced it when we did your head Xac

No worries, less than a fiver from our favourite local stealer. They have a pretty young lady on the parts desk now and she's incredibly friendly and helpful
