Radio Aux Input

I'm disappointed (read jealous) to find out that the pre-faeclift Xantia has a nice little aux input on the front of the head unit, while the post facelift (which is what I have) doesn't.

Would a pre-facelift head unit be a straight swap for a post-facelift head unit, including the steering wheel controls?

Alternatively, has anyone wired in an aux input into the post facelift head unit, maybe using the CD changer input?

An old Xantia radio should be a straight swap.

If you want to keep your newer radio you can get cd changer interface cables to hook up an ipod. Dunno about non-ipod mp3 players though...

If you want to go the whole hog, you can pick up the following:

I have that very head unit (the Sony) in my Saab (which is now my weekend car) so I was thinking about having a cage in each car and swapping as required, so maybe I will go for that. I'll have to check out the prices for the leads.

The steering wheel controls are completely different so i doubt they would be compatible, i have thought of the same thing for my Activa as i much prefer the aux input for my Ipod.

yep can confirm no steering wheel compatibility..

Sony head unit with the Autolead adapter to enable the steering wheel controls is easiest

note: I think the sony unit plugs straight into xantia wiring without any mods, could be wrong though..

You sure? The Autoleads website says all models from May 93 to June 2000 use the same steering wheel control cable (PC99-X09 as they call it...).

I'd prefer a nice new head unit anyway - the ability to play MP3 CDs is better than having a cassette deck IMHO. 8)

They may well do but S2 models have twice as many buttons on the steering wheel compared with S1's.

I think S2 buttons also put different resistances out ..

Yep my sony mp40 plays MP3 cd's which I randomly create at work

however, late Mk1s (with twin airbags) use the same rotary connector for the steeering controls as the MK2, so you should be able to fit a MK1 radio if you also fit a late Mk1 steering wheel.

My TD is a late S1 but doesnt have twin airbags. I have a spare S1 wheel and airbag that could be fitted to the Activa if it works as i prefer the earlier controls and the layout of the earlier 4030 head unit.

No, the airbag, airbag controller and the steering wheel connections changed for twin airbags, which were probably only fitted to high spec (VSX/Exclusive/Activa?) S1s from late 96.

So the Xantia's my drive to work car - don't really want to spend much cash on radios. So the old type radio won't work with the steering wheel controls - so why can't I wire in an aux socket - should only cost me pence.

What I was really after was something like THIS

A simple way of adding an aux input.

Anybody have any schematics of the PU-1562A head unit so I can figure out how to wire it in?

Dears,

there are in fact three different steering wheel controls in Xantias.
1. Mk1
2. Mk2 1998-1999
3. Mk2 2000+

and all incompatible. Also not compatible with any "standard" controls like Sony/Pioneer, JVC, Blaupunkt.

To get AUX in you can either find the right audio signals inside existing radio (casette signal or AM, alternatively CD changer input)

or

buy a new radio (with AUX or with USB or with Bluetooth). In order to get steering wheel controls working you will need to buy a commerically available adapter (InCarTec, Connect2 and others)
or build your own just like I did: http://picasaweb.google.cz/Pavel.Lajsner/SWC2. So far I'am able to control Sony/Pioneer, Blaupunkt and possibly JVC in the future (I know the protocol but I don't have any radio to check with).

Went down to the scrappers this morning (for a drivers door window regulator) and guess what I found:

I know it's not pretty but it works - problem sorted for no expense whatsoever!
