running in of a new turbo
hi, just a quick question. i just had a new turbo fitted on my laguna and im having bit of a dispute with the garage. the guy in the garage says its needed a 10 mile run in, which is why he took it home with him and used it to run his kids about in. normally this wouldnt bother me that much, but my car got keyed whilst it was parked outside his house overnight. seems bit of a coincidence that happens to be a 10 mile round trip from the garage to his house and back. anyone know if he's telling the truth? or just making excuses for the fact that he used me car for his own personal use

When I had mine replaced, they made no mention of any run in period/distance.
If he took the car home it's safety is his responsibility and therefore he's the one who should get the damage repaired.

load of rubbish jamie2011, i would have knocked off £1 per mile for the inconveniance, and got a quote for the damage, regardless of age or condition of the car, then give him the bill.
As for the turbo, running it up to engine operating temperature, would suffice, look after your turbo, before turning the engine off let it run for say 20 30 seconds then switch off, same on start up let it stand the same then resume normal operation, you wont starve the bearing of oil by doing the above,
and use a different garage, in the good old days of xr3i's and rsturbo's one garage i used managed to loose a mdf parcel shelf with kenwood 6x9 in them a the amp that was attached to the underside, i eventually got a £300 refund.

well, he has offered to repair the damage, but at his mates garage. who, for all i know , could just be some guy with a tin of spray paint from halfords. so i've got a quote from another garage, cancelled the cheque i had gave him for doing the turbo, and sending him another one in the post minus the cost of the damage. i dont think that will be the end of it though.getting the feeling it could get pretty messy!!

Looks like your in a bit of a situation here. Turbos do not need running in at all, you need to photograph the damage to make sure its not covered up and a claim against his insurance should be made.
