[size=18]Just had the AA out to look at my Synergie. The gear stick is ver loose when pulled back. The AA tells me it will be the Gear selector cable or even the gear box. Before it broke the car suffered from stiff gear changes, the clutch also felt heavy but the gear box does not sound noisy or did it make any noise when the gear stick went . I live in stevenage does anyone know of any good garages in the area i understand that the is a specialist in welyn garden city. Thank for any help with this matter[/size]

I'm not 100% sure which 'box is fitted to the Synergy but if it's the cable operated ML5 or the rod operated BE3 the first port of call has to be the linkage balljoints on both. Essentially, the ends of the cables or rods (depening on 'box) end up attached to little balljoints on the ends of the gearbox selector shafts. the cups on the ends of the rods or cables are set in rubber and it is not unknown for the rubber to tear and for the cup to pull out of the rubber. If this happens, the gearstick will go very floppy and it'll be more than likely impossible to engage gear at all.
A quick fix can be done by cleaning up the cup and rubber with mild solvent and using high quality superglue to glue the cup back into the rubber.
A broken cable is another matter. The whole gearstick/cable assembly has to be (expensively) replaced. Happily, the gearbox itself is very, very rarely at fault.
