Xantia 1.9TD aux belt advice needed

Unread post by admiral51 »

Hi all
The aux belt tensioner on my 1998 MK1 is fully adjusted but to me the belt feels a little on the loose side.its not that noticable as such but it just dont look right if that makes sense

It was only put on 2 months ago after the previous one snapped and took the cambelt with it so its not worn in that sense im just wondering if they do different sized belts and if i could have the wrong one fitted. i have checked the paperwork i got with the car and on the belt sleeve i can see no numbers but a written comment of odd size aux belt

Thanks in advance

Hi Colin

funnily enough I took mine off recently to check something, and it's impossible to get back on, with tensioner fully off. I had to prise it on, and made a note to get a new correct belt soon...

Must be slightly different sizes of these things..

These belts come in many different lengths. The tensioners can usually cope with a variety and can adjust 20mm or so on the length.

Note that the latter Mk 1s have two tensioners - a sprung loaded one at the top and an eccentric one at the bottom - similar to the 2.1TD setup. You'll definately need to release to sprung tensioner if you have a small-ish belt.
Pug Rifter long (20) - 41mpg - Gutsy for a 1.5!
Xantia 1.9 TD Temp.2 Break (97) - 208K@42mpg - Resting again.
Berlingo Multispace 1.6 16v (51) - 184K@36mpg - My shed! Still runs 15° retarded...

From looking at pr.net, there seems to be four different belts, varying in length by up to 13mm. The length depends on whether a Sanden or Harrison AC compressor is fitted.

13mm would be enough of a difference to explain why yours is loose Colin and yours is tight John. I've the same issue on my 2.1TD. It's a little loose even on full adjustment.

Maybe you could swap belts with each other.../
