Radio code costs "how much"

Hi
I am the proud new owner of a 2003 Megane Scenic.

I popped into my local Renault garage for some bits and pieces. I asked if I could have the radio code as it is not on the service book.

I could not believe that I have to £15.00 for them to do an email and get it for me. I then contacted Renault who said "we would suggest to contact your local Renault dealer for this as there is a charge"

Wow, thats one expensive email, which I think is a bit over the top.

I would have thought radios in "modern" cars were paired to the car using the chassis number via the BSI/canbus or whatever you want to call it?
