A smoking question.

Unread post by Jez K »

It's Ok, it's not about my health.
Driving up a hill yesterday felt the car pulling and all this smoke came out of the exhaust, turned round to go home and car was fine, not pulling or smoking on flat ground. Upon reaching another hill to finally get home same happened again. This morning noticed a few oil drops under the car. Anyone help with what the problem could be?
Cheers.

Even petrols may omit clouds af build up sooth from the exhaust during high engine loads. But only for a short while as the crud seems to "burn" out nicely over a short period.

Have you recorded engine oil consumption over the last period ?

There is a risc that an engine failure allows oil to reach the exhaust, in which case it may be dripping down a bit from any smallish leak in the exhaust piping.
Otherwise its fairly common that any car some 10yrs or more get a litte incontinent by time & wear, which may simply coincide with a smoking exhaust.

How do mean 'pulling' ? Sounds like the clutch might be slipping to me....

If it only happens when you are going up hills, it may be that you inadvertantly overfilled it with oil when you last changed it, or topped it up.
when did you last top up/change the oil?

For us not in the know, I think we see an oil light, panic and fill it up!!
On another subject, petrol in my local town, Eastbourne actually went down to 112p from 113p at Asda. Big news!
