I can't believe it's not diesel!

Unread post by stratblue »

Hi there.

I have just stumbled across some info about using veg oil and thought i would check it out here. I've searched on "veg oil" and it seems that I can just tip it into the tank. I have a M reg Xantia 1.9 TD SX. Is this really the case? How do I tell if I have a bosch fuel pump for sure? I've had a rummage under the hood and I've identified something centre left (d5/6e in the engine picture, says that's it) that has "Bosch" written on it (it's driven buy a large belt), is this it?. Can any one here make some soothing noises and assure me that my research is correct?

the diesel pump isn't driven by a belt you can see (you may have seen the alternator)... the pump it is driven by the cambelt (the large one) which should be covered in plastic.

the diesel pump should also look pretty complex with all the pipes etc, with what looks like a silver flying saucer on top, chances are it is the bosch pump you have seen...

with veggie oil, yes you can just pour it in, but please make sure it is ONLY a bosch pump, and definately NOT lucas one.

if it's your first time, do 50% diesel and 50% veggie oil, see how it goes, then if you are happy increase the ratio of veggie oil. beware in cold weather as the veggie oil thickens.

Yes the belt is covered in plastic. Thanks for the speedy reply!

Corn oil was 89ppl last time I was in Tesco, and of course KTC Soya is around 84ppl if you have access to costco.
Still considerably cheaper than the £1.20-1.30 diesel is around here.
As for economy, it varies from car to car and driver to driver, I get the same if not a little more from veg, it certainly has more oomph in my car.

With WVO, I hope you're refining it to biodiesel (nasty stuff) and not just filtering it...

I would have to admit to not noticing a reduction in fuel consumption when using SVO, I buy it from costco, last 20 litres I bought worked out at £0.829 per litre, unless because of the cheapness of the fuel you were using more right foot, I also reckon that my car seems a bit more torquey on SVO, my car isn't super economical anyway, about 40-42 mpg on a mix of A roads and dual carraigways, but mostly journeys of 10 or 20 miles, with maybe 1 or 2 miles of town driving on either end. I definately would have noticed the consumption getting to the mid 30's.

No, nothing wrong with filtering used oil, we are using filters and a centrifuge aswell as settling for a couple of weeks, its all 100% rapeseed originally.

Is that really sufficient to get rid of all the water and acids though?

People all over the world are using this method successfully long term.............even better with a twin tank and vehicle heater set up.

Xantia heated fuel filter helps a bit though.

Yes used to use them quite a bit.
What centrifuge do you use?

Just to add that it does depend on the quality of your oil supply. You can make nice Biodiesel from Hydrogenated oil which is mayo coloured but I wouldn`t want to use that as oil for the car.

If making biodiesel you can generally get away with poorer quality WVO than if just filtering.

Xantiaman, presumably you heat the oil before centrifuging? This definitely helps in removing the water.

I have recently started to collect WVO from a couple of suppliers but I am hoping to get more. Currently I estimate I'm getting about 80-100 litres every 3 weeks. What sort of yield of cleaned oil do you get from your waste?

Cheers
