Veggie oil - same as diesel prices :(

Unread post by RugbyPete »

Ok so now all the supermarkets are £1 a litre for veggie oil....

Its gone up 30p in a couple of weeks!

Also, the bookers shelf is never stocked of the 56p stuff, and the 20 litre cans work out £16 for 20 litres... plus the vat puts you up there to £1 a litre again!!

So, anyone gettign it cheaper? barely had a month of cheap fuel :(

There is a local supplier that does filtered wvo that i'm looking at, still wont be cheaper than the bookers oil but a saving none the less, at about 65ppl. Will be going to biodiesel only soon, again when i find a source, 15ppl cheaper than diesel.

Problem is, these days, it probably costs the same or sometimes is cheaper to run a petrol car than a diesel one.

Take a 1998 Nissan Micra 1.3 for example, it will do 48mpg on the motorway, which is what I would get from my ZX td (which can run on veggie). It would still make more sense to run the Micra... sadly!!

But a Micra is a smaller car than a ZX.

Yes this is true, but diesel would have to be 20p a litre more than petrol and only then would i consider going to petrol. The advantages of longer life and much better mid-range torque wins the diesel for me, and with the odd bit of WVO here and there, does help reduce the cost a bit.

Surely cooking oil is classed as foodstuff and as such is VAT free?

I would wager that under stop/start and traffic the Diesel will win easily... the thermic cycle is a lot better...

There is no car equal to a 2.1 td XM which will do anything like the 50 mpg that mine does - in luxury! Its 5mpg better than the ZX - I know, we have both.

It's true! Small petrol engines are weedy, hopeless things. Ugh! My 205TDs average 50MPG and will destroy similar petrol engined cars in the all important 40-80mph band.Driveability is so much better, too.

They are utterly fantastic little cars, would urge anyone who has not driven one yet to try it. A modern day mini cooper!

Even the non turbo one was a force to be recond with. When they first came out, my mother had one, its the first time I had experienced torque steer!

I've heard good things about the 205td too. But seriously, i reckon turning a few screws on my fuel pump would make it as quick as the 205. I've had it spinning in 3rd in the dry!

About the micra, it's small yes, but 75bhp in a body that weighs 826kg, it's more economical than my zx td, cheaper tax, sorry guys, but i'll have to get one!

I know I'm a bit anti-social, but i did defend my ZX didn't I. I'd love another XM you know, i'm thinkinf of getting a 2.1 over the nissan!

I bought the wife a hyundai accent 1.3i auto, 3 dr, had 47000 on it and in 7 months she has put the mileage over 61000. It had PAS and returns nearly 50mpg, only cost £450 down the auction, 97P, it has been fairly trouble free, had a cracked exhaust manifold when bought, which cost £20 at a scrapyard, had two tyres, plugs, 2 oil and filter changes, an air filter and both the rear antiroll bar drop links done. I am seriously thinking of putting LPG on it, and the best bit is that in the london market because of the auto box, it is probably still worth the best part of £1000.
With the cost of diesel being so high my xantia would be for the high jump if it didn't run on a svo mix, the last lot I bought at costco was £0.84 per litre.

Hi All.

It's pure Greed Greed Greed, from the manufactures of cooking oil.

Last summer, you could buy cheap veg oil on special offer for 40p per litre, now the same stuff is £1 per litre or somwhere thereabouts.

I cannot see that the production cost has gone up this much in one year, it's the fact that they know why we want it and they know that they can get the price, so greed has taken hold.

Looking on it from a marketing side, putting veg oil at £1 per litre is not realy a problem for them, as when little old Mrs Bloggs toddles off to do the weeks shopping, she may buy one bottle, this will last her for frying eggs etc about a month, so she is not realy going to complain about the price, as far as she is concerned, £1 per litre for something that lasts a month is still good value.

From our point of veiw, are we going to complain, not realy, cos we realy dont want to advertise what we are doing and bring attention to it.

Or this could be total Bollox and I am just being cynical !!!

What do you think?

Regards
Slim

Sorry Slim have to disagree. People that will complain are the shops, restaurants, hotels etc who use gallons of the stuff every week. The reason for the cost hike is a cumulative one. There have been many news items in the media (printed and visual) of the extremely high price rises of grain stocks over the past 6 months (in excess of 100% in some items), due in part to poor harvests and also due to higher demand from an increasing population and the worlds desire to use more Biofuels. Corn, Soya etc are not exempt from this. The raw materials for Veg oil are now much more expensive and this cost has to be passed on.

On the other hand, it could just be that I have recently bought a Xantia with the intention of running it on SVO and God hates me
