Power loss Have i blown the turbo ?

Post by tdolman »

Hi all, I was driving down the motorway last night at a reasonable speed when I felt a power loss as I came off the slip road I could clearly hear the turbo whistling (I cant normally hear it at all) now its got very low acceleration and Its hard to get up to 70mph and it smokes on full throttle.

I'm guessing the turbos gone or could it just be a pipe come adrift.

Any one give me an idea where to start looking.

Thanks

If the turbo had gone, it would smoke like a train all the time. Far more likely is a boost pipe popping off or spliting.

Just to add the smoke you see flat out will be overfuelling because the air doesnt match the fuel. You make no mention of the car but this doesnt really matter, any turbocharged car thats had a pipe come off does the same.

I agree, it's usually something very simple like a pipe or a connector, have a ramble around underneath and see what you can find.

A blown turbo is very unlikely, it's practically unknown on cit/pug cars.

That is good Tim :D

Tell you what, you should hear and see one pop off when you have your head under the bonnet. It goes offf with a really loud "POP"

Normally, this happens when I forget to tighten up a jubilee clip

Mine "Popped" off one morning while taking my son to work and it really did pop, together with the throttle pedal kicking back followed by a loud prolonged hiss.

There were no other indications of anything wrong so I just carried on and dropped him. All seemed normal until I hit the upgrade on the way back.
Normally ascend it at around 70. Wouldn't do more than 40.

Naturally I started to worry then, imagining the big bills. Just pushed the tube back on when I got home and investigated, never any more trouble.
It did highlight that the turbo DID actually work for its living after all.

This was the Xantia, not the C5

First time it happened to me was just after I changed the cam belt - my first one. Had that dread feeling I had wrecked the engine - much better when I realised it was just a loose hose

Second time was giving it plenty on one of the uphill dual carriageway sections on the A66 - felt something just as we crested and I lifted off, then on the next section, foot on the boards in 3rd and nothing. Fortunately the only tool I had in the car was a screwdriver 8) Damn hot reaching under the top hose on a hot engine though....
