Peugeot Expert van crunches into 3rd gear - advice please

Hi all,recently bought an expert van instead of using the estate for work,its a 1999 1.9 td which drives spot on except for 3rd gear.If you engage 3rd slowly it doesnt crunch but under normal driving it will.

Feels like the syncro to me but never had this problem before with my pugs so any advice is welcome

Im also trying to find the gearbox code as i believe it should be a ME5K?

Anybody ever stripped one before or is it a specialist job?

Hi Matt,

An oil change is worth a try first but it sounds to me like the third gear synchro I'm afraid.

Now I always thought if it was a 1.9TD that it would have a BE3 gearbox

But then you'd know precisely what a BE3 looks like.

If it's a BE3 then third gear is a well known weak spot due to the alloy synchro clutches wearing through hard use and/or neglected oil changes.

I did a guide on how to strip and rebuild a BE3. It's not that difficult.

An ME gearbox though will be a different proposition and they will use a different synchro arrangement and spares will be expensive. Best to get another 'box from a scrapper if you can. I've not stripped one yet...

Thanks for the quick reply,i was hoping it was a be3 cos i have a spare one behind the shed! ill check at the weekend to see what is stamped on the box
