Xantia: steering creaking noise

My Xantia is now making a creaking noise that I cannot locate.

The noise is only present when moving the steering wheel, and it seems to come from the engine bay. It is more noticeable when the car is parked with a warm engine for a few minutes, and then driven again. For example, I start the car in the morning, cold engine, hardly any creaking noises. Drive to the shops, around 2 miles, engine warms up, get there, 10 minutes later I get back in the car, start the engine and the noise gets quite loud. After a while it dissappears.

It drives me crazy! :evil:

Any idea where the noise is coming from? Dodgy drop links? Strut top? Steering rack?

maybe its the pump belt, i dont think the items you mention would create a differnt noise with hot or cold engine, the other thing which could change the noise it make is possibly front struts if they are tight
