100% SVO + unleaded

well my xantia is finally all ok again

new leather seats in, front end completely repaired..

filters all changed

and cambelt and ABS still on agenda asap..

but, can i start her up on 100% ?? not a chance.. 5 glow plug goes, 6 attempts with starter to get an idle, finally it will catch and I can rev it to subdue the huge clouds / put up with the knocking noise and all is well..

Going to change plugs tomorrow.. fingers crossed..

Have been lucky with changing them before, 30 mins on two occasions ...

will test them when they are out

so, dont recommend 100% then?

Is aNYTONE doing it or do i need a tank heater and uprated plugs?

Whats your car like to start normally? Mine turnes over about 5 times then starts.. im trying 50:50 and will increase from there i think

hi Pete yes def recommend...
once running runs like a dream..

to be fair mine was always a bit smokey on start up.. I got the glow plugs ages ago but have had no time to fit..

quite a few of us are 100%

will know more with new plugs..

right now I am getting more used to giving throttle asap after i turn her over..

Mine starts and runs great on 90% SVO, 10% unleaded.

I always run mine on 100% apart from when I need a diesel reciept for expenses and haven't been down to my parents' to pick up their reciepts.
Working glowplugs are a must, especially with the cold snap we're currently having.

Ive been using 100% since the day i bought my xantia, except when very cold and it got some BP Ultimate diesel put in but long since given up on that now, either some acetone or nothing at all

Hi,

From your post it looks like your car may have been off the road for a bit. If so did you run it on straight diesel before you shut it down the last time?

If not you may be suffering from congealed/ solidified SVO in your injectors.

hmm back in November it was probably off road for a couple of weeks max.. but has been pretty good since then.. (about 3-4000 miles)

going to take glows out tomorrow and pray 2 are broken

The secret is a good 12mm cranked ring spanner, a wodge of rag stuffed down behind the injector pump and a lump of Blu-Tac

Useful also might be a magnet on a stick and a long flexible retractable claw. MikeT treated me to these items after he saw my propensity for loosing bits of engine in inaccessible paces and I must say they've been a godsend!!!

There's nothing quite like listening to something working its way down the engine bay but not hearing it hit the ground. They always seem to land on the bit of crossmember beside the oil leak too, no matter what car you are working on.

well, all done, also did rocker cover gasket which has been on list for a while..

Ba$$£d plug took 10 mins and the rest took 10 mins between them.. It's the 3rd time I have done GP's but they never get easier (or harder)

I struggled more with the xantia;s ducting down the back of the engine...

For what its worth, every pipe or wire that was even slightly in the way was removed or at least pushed out of way. The whole job took about 1 1/2 hours, I managed with a small 8mm and 12 mm socket, a good 8mm spanner, a good 12mm spanner, a large 10 and 12mm socket, and flat screwdriver (magnetic) and a few small extensions..

the best bit .. plugs 1 and 4 dead as dodo's

car starts perfectly now, treated it to 14x3l sainsburies Veg oils

ooh no it doesnt !

impossible to start in mornings, dead as..

its pretty good after a few hours during the day, normally if it's the plugs it never starts from cold properly, even a few hours..

I am wondering if there is something wrong with pump... cold start parts..

there is a small servo thing that pushes again the throttle lever, at the back of the pump, any ideas what it could be?

The fuel bulb feels quite solid but that could be cold veg oil inside it.. it's slow to get it's shape back....

100% veg? Mine got increasingly harder to start on thick mixes and it was only when i found oil got its way into the top part of pump i found the eccentric cone had partially seized inside the pump, for some time the oil has been in there and make a thick, gunky mess. Since cleaning it, its been perfect on starting although TBH, its only on 50/50% mix at the moment, one cycle of the glow plug too.

I'm all for saving money on this veg oil thing, but i am not willing to sacrifice a good cold start and have it hunting until it gets warm.
