I have a 1998 (S Reg) Xantia 1.9TD. The clutch cable went kaput (or maybe the clip, i'm still tasking it apart. (its the clip Ive just seen it)
2 problems apart from the expected and well documented ones:
1) The under engine cover retaining bolts/clips two have broken out, on two the threaded part has come loose from the rest of the clip making it impossible to unscrew. I stupidly applied the angle grinder to one, bolt head forgetting it was mounted on plastic so that it melted the whole clip through the upper panel, still solidly attached to the bolt and engine cover. Do I really need to put the panel back afterwards?
2) My clutch cable has a large 25mm dia by 100mm long thingy in the middle of it at the rear of the engine, Retained by a large "P" clip bolted to the chassis/body, it also has a concertina boot and a spring inside about 100mm long. The casing can be opened and it looks like the cable is in two parts, is it? Or is is it just a permanent tension device to take up the clutch wear. I don't see how I can feed this great lump through the retaining rings/loops. Does it go or does it come apart in the middle?
I notice no one else has mentioned the above part in other Xantia clutch cable threads here.
Different Xantia clutch cable??

2150.X7 - CLUTCH CABLE LONG 1585
- TURBO DIESEL XUD9TE AND GEARBOX BE3 AND RIGHT HAND DRIVE
This cable is valid for all '98 on TD models.
As the listing text indicates, the overall length of the cable is 1585mm, which would be the first check you do to insure its the right cable type you've got.
The cable can not be split (the correct cable that is), and simply twists into the bend steelwire supports. Only in one location, you have a halfmoon retainer which must be removed to replace the cable.
The clutch end of the cable fits through a slot in the bracket.

1) A couple of the clips on mine have sheared off but I have managed to re-attach it using nuts and bolts with large (penny) washers.
2) What you have is a self adjusting clutch cable (as is on my car). It is removed by drawing it straight downwards after releasing both ends of the cable. You should be able to release the gearbox end by pulling it and moving the cable through the slot in the arm. The pedal end is released by removing the metal clip (if the clutch clip has broken then this clip may be in the footwell). When re assembling attach the pedal end first. When I last replaced mine (about 3 years ago) the cable was a dealer part as GSF did not stock it.

I changed my clip (the original was the brittle black one) before it broke and I managed to get the bolt out without sawing the head off. It was tight on the clearance with the brake pedal but it did come out. I also replaced the clutch cable at the same time.
