Old subject/new prob. Heater blower& rear windscreen goo

Hi Gang,

I am having a problem with my xantia mk2.

the heater blower and rear heated windscreen is not working.

The car was modified by citroen with relay for usual ignition switch problem

This is my problem I've checked for resistor problems and replaced same previously it worked fine for 2years.

I've checked the fuses and they appear to be working fine and both relays are working checked with multi meter.

I altered the relays and got the blower working and buzzer sound from relay when I press rear windscreen switch.

Have anybody out there had similar problems

The relay i used was spare blower relay which is very similar in design and rating.

Any sugestions gratefully received as I'm getting frustrated

Hi Kenny,

Not too sure of what’s happening here.
Did changing relays make the blower work ?
Can you hear or feel the blower relay clicking in; item 10 in the drawing ?

There’s been a recent topic (not finding it) where the 12 volts wasn’t getting to the blower relay.
If the relay doesn’t click, it may be the old ignition switch contact that’s let go for good, and the relay switching should be transferred to another ignition contact, as Simon says:

Thanks Clogzz,

The power supply to both blower and rear windscreen relays is a direct feed and 12v's is passing through but there is secondary feed which goes through the ignition switch. This is supplying 12vs in but nothing coming out.the brown connector under the steering column.This prior to it reaching the other fuse.

I found this out by using a multimeter and checking the voltage passing at various points in the electrical circuit.

Basically this small feed line runs from the battery through the big fuse in the engine compartment to the ignition switch through a fuse F5 in the BOL and revue technique etc.THIS supply does NOT feed the relays.

As i said above the supply reaches the ignition switch and stops no 12v out of ignition switch and thereafter at fuse.

I was thinking about bypassing the ignition switch and fitting my own switch.

Any thoughts on this suggestion would be greatfully received as I@m using my rugby cold gear to keep warm in the car

That looks like the original switch contact that used to carry the high blower current has been modified to operate the relay only since, and that’s packed up now.
The solution is to use the light grey plug’s top red output wire (marked 2) to operate the relay, as in Mandrake’s picture here:

Ouch ! New Year’s eve on the job doing ‘yobbo control’ !

The red wire from the grey plug has 12 V out on ignition and start, but the fan controller won’t operate until the engine runs.

Hi gang,

Followed Mandrakes route to use grey 12v out (2) and bingo it works at last.

Even with the modification porblems can occur with the ifgnition switch.

I've got a similar problem, fan and rear heater packed up this evening.
I installed a relay around this time last year, and haven't had a problem.
I've taken the 12v fan power from the cigar lighter socket.

If I were to take the ignition feed from the radio to switch the relay would this work and would it re-enable my rear window heater?

Depends on where it’s let go this time.
If the cigar lighter supply has gone, then taking it to the radio will fix it for now.
It will be simpler to check why the cigar supply went, probably the fuse gone from overload or short.

It will bring back the rear window heater too because the heater relay is operated from the same supply as the fan, while the heating current is coming from another supply.

The cigar lighter socket still has power.

I've used the original feed off the ignition switch to control the relay, and the fan power from the cigar feed.

The fan not kicking in and the rear heater not working suggests the ignition switch has finally given up the ghost, so not switching the relay when the ignition is on.

If I move the blower relay off of the original ignition switch and onto the radio's ignition switch, it should work right?

One thing that gets me, when working normally, the fan won't come on unless the engine is running right?
What controls that?
What would be the result of doing away with the ignition switch and wiring up a perminant 12v supply if the fan isn't going to start unless the engine is running?

It will work if you operate the relay from the radio feed.
The fan spin is controlled by the pictured climate control ECU under the dash.
That only works after the engine ECU tells it that the engine is running.

If you wire a permanent supply to the fan motor, the electronic fan motor drive will always be energised, not a good idea for a high-current circuit where the output transistors are in the habit of shorting, and stories of air-conditioned Xantiae

going for wrecking because of dash fires.

Hope the inconsiderate parker hasn’t gone to bed.

When wiring into the radio feed, it’s meant to be for when the radio gets turned off with the key out.
The fuse box has provision to change the radio fuse to a place where it works with the key out.
If so, that would be no help, as the fan relay and motor would always be energised.
The fuse location depends on the vintage.

I don't have a rear heater though.

I'd have done the mod there in the first place! I thought the connectors were under the steering column shroud.

Now, it appears that the ignition switch that controls the rear screen heater and blower is totally dead.
Am I right in thinking that it's the brown connector that comes off this particular ignition switch?
Does it only control the rear screen heater and blower?
Can I cut it off the brown connector to the left of it (the thinner pink and red wires) and then splice them onto the grey connector's white and red wires so that the grey connector's ignition switch controls the rear screen and blower relays?
