IIRC early C5's suffering from knocking noises from the rear subframe is a common problem that I'm not sure has ever been resolved. I believe Citroen tried various methods, replacing subframes etc AFAIK with little success

Citroen goes bang !!
Aha! So the C5 problem is common - wonder why Citroen have not come out and said so (or as mentioned is it because they are unable to fix it)? As for the BX, the exhaust has been thoroughly checked so will concentrate on the rear suspension arm bearings. Thanks for all of your suggestions and info. so far. Fellow sufferers are invited to share their experiences (and cures?).
