Does anyone know how the 1.9TD Xantia back silencers differ between the hatchback and estate?

Looking on the internet, the obvious difference is the rear-most hanger, towards the middle on the hatchbacks, outermost on the estate. Other than that they look pretty similar - are there great differences?

I'm asking because the estate one is £50-plus but I can get a budget hatchback one for about half price.

It's typical isn't it: I ordered a cheap decat pipe yesterday and by the time I got home the joint to the silencer had fallen off! So now running in TD-Sport mode without a silencer.

Well, the estate is 10" longer than the hatch, so that must be taken up somewhere......

Ah, excellent Richard. That would account for the price difference. The relative size wasn't obvious on the drawings I saw. I was hoping to find a smaller silencer as it clearly doesn't need the giant fitted, but it's no good if too short.

I'm disapointed at having to buy a £60 silencer when the car is fine; running at the moment with the cat and then a straight through pipe. Noise is a burble and muted enough at speed. I don't know if this will still be the case when the cat is replaced by a non-cat pipe

I think I'll hold off the order for the estate silencer and see. There's no point in restricting the exhause flow any more than is necessary...

Usually its just the rearmost pipe section that differs in length. The damper itself is the same size.
There are no reasons why an Estate should have larger/longer damper than a hatchback. They still got the same engines ...

I quite agree with you Anders, hence my initial questions. And given the fact that the TD isn't noisy without a rear silencer, I'm even more loathed to pay-up and get one!
