406 The dreaded engine management light

Unread post by johninderbyshire »

Hi, got a 406 2l HDi 1999 (not face lift model)
Sometimes, the engine management light comes on, and the car goes into "safe mode" ie. won't rev over 3000. Sometimes stopping and restarting solves the problem, sometimes it won't go away. Almost always after parking up for a longer period of time such as a few hours or overnight, the car runs fine and no engine management light, but then it suddenly comes back on again.
Arrggghh.
I'm sure there are a million and one reasons for the light to come on but......
Are there any common faults with these, any starting points, anything I should try first, or should I just bite the bullet and pay the main dealer for a diagnostic?

My 99 Hdi 110 developed very similar problem whilst towing my caravan down to Dover at the start of my holiday to France - I called the AA who plugged his laptop into it - the fault that showed was (if my memory serves me correctly) was 'Turbo/supercharger wastegate servo'. AA man cleared the fault code, engine management light was extinguished and full power was restored, however the fault recurred after about 50 miles and regularly after that - with full power always being restored after turning the engine off for a couple of minutes and then turning it back on (alhough the management light sometimes stayed on).
Once I got it to France I got the local garage to have a look he said (I think, if my french is any good) that the fault that showed was low boost from the turbo - he cleaned a couple of electrical connections and replaced a sensor (don't know which one) however the fault recurred - I took it back and his diagnosis was that the catalytic convertor is causing the problem as it isn't the original (I had it replaced at the local cheap tyre and exhaust place early this year). Any thoughts on this ? I'm reluctant to spend hundreds on an OE 'cat' just on the off chance that he is right. Is it possible to replace the 'cat' with piece of straight pipe ? or is replacing the wastgate servo the way to go ? Help please
