HELP NEEDED no2!!!!!

Hi all. when i am driving my xsara 1.9td 1998 every now and then i get the stop light on the dash come up and the light on the tempruture guage. i assume that its to say the car is over heating but it is not. it can even come on just after i start the car. any idea what it could be. many thanks. jamie

No! ------------------ But when you find out, let me know. My daughter's Xsara does the same thing. Presumably it's a dodgy connector some where.

The overtemperature light is usually on its own sensor on the thermostat housing. It'll most likely be dodgy connections. I cannot recall off hand what sensor it is but it'll be one with just one connection even though it will have a two pin plug on it.

The lamp needs an earth to light so the problem may be a bit of dirt and corrosion has got in (a bit of coolant maybe?) to the sensor connector.

As per Jim’s … the brown temperature sensor operates the cooling fans and bad contacts cause stop and overheat indications.
It also causes the fans to come on for no reason.

You get the same lights on a 1.9 td Xantia. In that case it's caused by the Bitron unit which controls the cooling fans etc.

The Bitron is supplied by a brown coloured temperature sensor which is mounted on the fuel filter base.

Now, I don't know if your Xsara has a Bitron unit but if it does, the problem is usually a build up of oxidation on the brown electrical connector on the temp sensor. Just pull it off and push it back on a few times and it will probably cure the problem.

In addition to that, the Bitron pins are tinned with solder, and in time the contacts become dodgy, most obviously pins 7 & 14 that have the resistive brown sensor input.
I had this problem, and cured it by scraping the Bitron pins with the rough end of a piece of broken metals hacksaw blade.
A previous squirt of WD40 on the Bitron pins was good for only a few days.
Citroën in France made free out-of-warranty brown-sensing modifications back then.
It wasn’t a recall, or correction, or modification ... it was an evolution: :roll:

All sorted. just took off the conectors of the thermostat hosing and gave them a good clean. is all a ok now. many thanks. jamie
