Activa Insurance Shock!!!

Unread post by CitroJim »

I've just received my renewal quote for the Activa  :(

Before I say how much, I'm 47, 9 years NCB, clean licence, no risks whatsoever. Model driver as far as insurance is concerned. My only claim recently was a new windscreen.

I have used a certain company for the past 28 years and although good, they have got expensive now. Earlier this year they wanted over £300 to insure Dad on his 205D :o

The quote was £406

I had a look a confused.com and was staggered at the variation in quotes which ranged from £240 :D to nearly £500 from the company who quotes you happy

The best quote came in from a company who use a cute little dog (no, not Churchill!) in their advertising who seems to have rather a lot of luck.

Question is, is this company any good or would I be more than foolish to go with them?

Try cis for a quote.
My best from all the major companies was 350 fully comp
CIS did me fully comp with protected no claims for 280
Im only 23 and drive a 19td xantia with 5 yrs ncb

CIS have the added benifit of being polite and easy to deal with. Wish Id found them earlier.

Well, if it means anything, I've been insured with MORE TH>N for a
couple of years now for all my cars and not had problems - that said of
course I haven't claimed from them but let's face it, with an old Citroen
that's a farce anyhow...

I try to pay the lowest I can for the main legal rquirement but do pay up
for their legal assistance and no-claims protection.

I found swiftcover by far the cheapest for my TD Cits- but they might not cover an Activa as they seem to go for the "middle of the road" cars - they won't even insure the wife's mini (the proper one...), let alone my Scimitar SS1..

For anything remotely sporty i have used HIC before i think the site is www.hicinsurance.com or the like. anything from the current xantia 2.1td to my coupe have been very good, even if you get it cheaper elsewhere they wil always match it and do a much better deal in the whole as well :)

Thanks KP,

I gave them a try and they came out a bit more than More Th>N but if they match quotes :D :D

Interestingly the company they chose was the same as who insure my 205GTi through Firebond :)

Thanks Elma,

I just have and got this
Your request for an online motor quote cannot be completed.
I'll be ringing them later in the week, along with the other likely contenders.

Damn, nevermind. Sorry If I seem pushy but they have been the only insurer I have ever used that I would recommend and I would like to see some others get decent service as well.

The thing is with the Activa is that the engine we only see here in the U.K. is a low pressure turbo engine. So, although the car can corner very well it does not exactly have a V8 under the bonnet.

Looking at the other side of the coin regarding "middle of the road" well as the Activa suspension allows the car to corner more safely, then it should be viewed as a means keeping the car physically in the middle of the road, so as a safety aid then it should help lower the insurance quote.

It's as if the quotes the insurance companies are doing for the Activa are for the European spec cars, I.E. the HDI or V6 either of which is quicker than the low pressure turbo one we see.

Same problem here, we only had the low-pressure turbo, but insurance companies think that turbo means racing car, and charge ratbag rates.

Hi Clogzz :)

So really we all might as well have had the same spec choice that the rest of Europe were given to choose from, and it would be more fair, and they might have sold more cars.

Now if the limited choice was a question of economics by some daft short sited bean counter, then they should have looked at the bigger picture, where having sold more cars the company would have made more profit.

Then these insurance quotes might at these rates seem more appropriate, given that the car would have a V6 under the bonnet.

Hi ACTIVE8, :) and welcome back if I may say, it looked like you had vanished for a while.

Producing short runs of right-hand-drives must look like complications to the bean counters, hence the limited choice we get.
The cars we get here are the UK models, except for a difference in the anchorages for a child’s seat in the back, and the speedo that has to be in kilometers only.

There are many 6-cylinder cars here from several makers, because fuel is cheaper, and the tax regime for cars is governed by a recipe book that the Americans gave them during World War II.
A former colleague of mine bought a 1974 Cadillac Eldorado convertible from a mafia boss before he went to jail.
It had an engine of over 7 litres capacity.
His wife had a Mitsubishi Colt with a 1.4 litre engine, I think.
The all-up difference in road tax and insurance cost was something like only £40 per year.
It’s often the 6-cylinder cars that are the cheapest to insure because they are supposed to be conventional cars with sedate drivers … but they ‘mishandle’ like barges.

contiunuing after cloggz last comment... shockingly... the insurance for a 2.1td vs. V6... were talking about a car with nearly double the power... 194 vs. 110bhp, and 4 vs 6cyl... etc.... the difference... going FROM the 2.1td to a V6... only £50 more!! Work that one out.

Happy days :D :D

I gave my insurer a call today. I'm with Frizzells (Liverpool Victoria) and I have used them since 1977 (excepting periods of overseas service) and they have always been very good. I'm sure any others in the employ of Her Majesty on here will be aware of them from the CSMA.

Anyway, I expressed my disappointment and an advisor went through my policy with a fine toothed comb and found I had unlimited foreign use and full business use, two things I no longer need. After that the premium plummeted to £277  :D

I know that is still a little more than some others but I'm happy to pay to stay with a company I fundamentally trust.

Two things come out of this exercise: Always look at the competition and then see what deals can be made with your present insurer and check carefully your cover does not do more than you need.

Oh, and they have no problem with the Activa  They see it as nothing special or difficult from an insurance point of view.
