On later cars with multiplexed control of rear lights - there is an extra outlet in the lamp cluster socket directly parallel to the bulbs in the lamp clusters. Commonly the LHS rear cluster.
You dont need any decoding or power feeds. Just plug in the cable connector supplied with the towbar.
You will of course need the towbar exactly matching your 406.

I have fitted 2,the first was my Dads HDI GLX X reg,the 2nd was his car that i have now.The tow bar is easy to fit(on the estate).I dont recall the X reg being multi plexed. But my car we used the pre wired socket that pluged in as anders said.On his current 407 that he got in oct,we used the connector plug.Although it cost around £80,it saves alot of hassle.

If you're using a Smart 7 relay you'll need a 12volt supply. When I did the towbar and 12N/12S wiring on my C5, I took two feeds directly from the battery, through inline fuses.David Humphrey wrote: do you have to take a power supply directly from the battery and use the connection to connect to a relay ?
