Rear Arm Bearing Renewal

I am going to try and renew the rear arm bearings on my 94 Xantia VSX Turbo diesel this weekend (as one does at Easter-lol)
Has anyone any experience of this and apart from "Dont do it" is there any advice or even an "idiots guide" somewhere just to make sure I have covered everything and dont end up with a pile of bits after the weekend.

This is just one of the many postings on different forums about rear arm bearings. Xantia is more or less the same as BX. Note that estate versions have bigger bearings.

You may be able to reuse your old shims --- a bag of shims from Citroen costs nearly £12 !!!

Machine Mart do a suitable torque wrench for about £15, if you want to be precise about the preload on the bearings.

The key to getting the outer bearing tracks out is to use a wood chisel or large screwdriver and cut up and remove the plastic tube that runs through the arm, than a lip will be revealed where you can gain some purchase with your drift and knock out the race, I re-used the shims and did it all up tight, otherwise straightforward.

You dont use a torque wrench to achive the correct bearings preload. The torque setting on the arm pivot bolt is for securing the bolt/nut correctly - not the bearings.
Once the bolt/nut is torqued correctly - its the shimming between the spacercup and the bearing that defines the bearings preload.
It may not be clear from the links submitted, but it is in fact depicted in the genuine Citroen document. Also its very well explained in the Haynes for BX.

The shortcut here is to observe if there are any shims found, once the old bits are out of the arm. Then its simply a matter of re-using the shims.

Get your haynes manual and follow the manaul. Remove the rear bearing using a dremmal tool with a metal cutting disc and then remove the bearing shell, use a good screwdrivel that you can wallop with a hammer. Give it all a good clean and then put the new bearings in in reverse order but reallly pack in the new grease. I have done the job on 2 Bx's and 2 Xantia's, it's not that hard a job, just a little frustrating.
