Changing Coolant C5 Hdi

Unread post by jmd »

The Owners Handbook states "use Special Citroen Fluid". What's wrong with the regular Ethyl-Glycol mixed at a 50% - 50% ratio, which I have been using in my Xantia Td (XUD) for years. Can anybody advise.

most modern cars have a completly differant type of coolant these days,im not sure of the full spec and diferants but i do know you MUST NOT mixs certain ones, they are also differant colours, but even saying all that you should be able to purchase the corect one for your car from the motor factors

Also you will most likely find a statement like :
"Citroen recommands to use TOTAL engine oil 10W40 ONLY in your car"

No.
Xantia's dont have any special Citroen requirements for fluids.
Statements like the one you've found in your owners manual are for those owners who dont know about automobile fluids - thus making sure you dont pour in blue screenwasher fluid as coolant or vice-versa etc.

Its meant as a bottom line safety advice, to make sure the average owner gets exactly what he needs for his car.

Thanks for the comments. I will renew the Coolant tomorrow using the old reliable Ethyl-Glycol mixed at a 50% - 50% Distilled Water (live in a high lime area)

I called to my local supplier today (motor factor) and he refused to sell me Ethyl-glycol. He told me that the C5 uses a Bio-degradable coolant, which is yellow in colour. Strangely enough the one in my C5 isn't yellow, but looks like Ethyl-glycol (Blue). He advises me that they cannot be mixed, So I will probably will drain completely, to the extent of draining, refilling with water to dilute whatever is in the heater, and use the C5 recommended one. Thanks for all your advice

i would strongly sudgest if you are not sure what previous tinkerers have instaled into the cooling system, you thoughraly flush the system with a coolant flush,as i said earlyer some of these modern coolants MUST NOT be mixed

I agree with Malcolm - just imagine the consequences if the things produce a deposit or corrosion when mixed.

Mind you - there haven't been any horror tales on here yet!

i agree with Jeremy also it could be possible when mixing them you might end up with you coolant curdling so clogging every thing up
