Got a call from a friend tonight who's having problems with her 405.....
Starts and runs fine, but as soon as you dip the clutch the revs drop and the engine dies.
Any ideas before i go and look at it tomorrow armed with code readers and the likes?!
All i know about it (at the moment) is it's a 1995 petrol model

Petrol XU engines in winter! Tell me about it
This sort of bad behaviour is often caused by the throttle body and breathers being choked with "mayo" (nasty wet emulsified oil), particularly the idle control valve. Give it a good dose of carb cleaner.
Check all the breather pipes for perishing and leaks. Also check the inlet tract as a whole for air leaks. They really seem to show up in this weather.
For a bit more detailed diagnosis, it'll be handy to have the full engine spec.

Think it's sorted now.
Went down armed with autodata and the fault code readers.
Water level was proper low so i'm guessing the water wasn't reaching the ECT sensor and causing the revs to hunt.
Cleaned out the air filter which was choked with hay (horsey woman), cleaned the TB with some carb cleaner and all seems well.
No fault codes registered so hoping it was just a one off!
