sorry but its a volvo

Yes I know ,shoot me but a friend has just picked up a 740 2.0litre auto 1990 at auction . its a one owner , millions spent on the maintenence over the years but it keeps cutting out and will only start if jumped with 24 volts. any help gratefully received. regards john.

A bad earth somewhere I reckon.

A bit brutal to jump with 24V though!!!!!!

I agree - earth - try a well placed jump lead straight from the battery to the engine! (not conclusive if it won't work)

Also look for plugs in the engine electrics - for example the BX has one in the positive cables under the battery - and the starter current goes through it. This regularily corrodes and a good clean sorts it.

If you've got a meter - check voltage across battery earth to engine - more than 0.5 volt when starter operates - problems - and so on.

Standard faults on just that model are:

- faulty TDC sensor (fitted at the rear end of the valve cover on the clutch cover)

- faulty ignition module (fitted on the LH front inner wing panel)

Other peoples Volvos are one of my sins (living in Sweden)

you seriously risk damaging the electronics sticking 24V up it pluss you can damage the alternator

About 25 years ago, after freezing nights in Belgium, we used to start the DS’s with 24 volts.
No damage ever, no electronics, and the alternators never found out either.
That was then.
