AFAIK it's virtually the same as the old XUD except - you don't need to pin the injection pump as it is not timed, and there's no automatic tensioner - it's just a manual one like the 2.1 TD engine. You're supposed to set the tension with a SEEM meter, but I'm not sure that's ever done - the 90 degree twist is the usual test, but I understand that setting the tension on the tight side of this is best. Note that the torque setting for the bolt in the tensioner is very low, and if you overcook it, it can shear off later, losing the belt tension - you really need a low range torque wrench to check this. I don't think the 90 has a vernier pulley on the cam, but I think the 110 does. I can check in Autodata and post the instructions if required.

early hdi's have all got vernier pulleys the late ones have a solid pulley on camshaft but an elongated slot on keyway on crankshaft so lower sproket can move during belt tension to allow correct tension with seem gauge. gauge used in most dealers as if belt fails it comes back on the dealer, dont overtension belt to much will pull bearings out of idlers and water pump. if you do a 1.4/1.6 hdi dv4 or dv6 late one mind out as these pumps are now timed and have a pin to lock there position

DV4 & DV6 engine pumps are pegged for balance reasons, the are not timed in any way to the engine.

i thought it was something to do with the pistons pumping at near time of injection which helps with a steady fuel pressure in the rail and it not fluctuating to much? well thats what i sort of remember from training at pug :? :? must be timed to the engine as hole lines up in pump pulley when camshaft and crankshaft timing pins are in..

Thats sort of along the same idea about balance inside the pump but it is not timed to the engine.if you didnt peg it & spun the pulley round & refitted the belt in a random position the engine would still start & run no problem.
