Citroen DS stylee

Post by kafkaian »

Does anyone have a DS on this forum? I know they're probably expensive as refurbed units, but does anyone know how to get hold of one for the start of a ten year project? [;)] I'd love to get my hands on what is, IMHO, a most beautiful and fascinating concept.

Even if you buy a "good" one, whatever that may be, you'll have a ten year project. If you can live with it, it will also be a love affair but for guidance, a friend in europe tends to find viable ones for about 4000E. You might want to look up the AA garage in the South of France on the net. That'll get you in the ballpark. Don't at any cost buy a basket case because you'll never get it finished. Spares are hard to find and they are a complete swine to restore and debug, which is not to deny your skill, persistence or resourcefulness nor yet the wonderful thing that is the Goddess but spend a little more and buy one that works. I'm sure that even the most ardent DS fans would agree with me

I think in the end it'll probably be a pipe dream but 4000E is a price I'd pay. But you are correct of course and I agree - I think a shambolic pile of rotting steel would be a project too far and I take your advice with full concurrence.

Then raid the piggybank. The rest of the world are waking up to the fact that really cool people own them and the prices can only go one way IMHO once they become a fashion statement, which at present looks very likely

Easiest way to pick one up could be to subscribe to the Citroens for Sale Yahoo list:
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/CitroensForSale/
as there are the occasional ones popping up for sale on there.
Strangely enough, living in Australia, we possibly see more of them than you guys as there are heaps around in clubs out here. I can tell you though, that they are an extremely expensive affair to repair with parts prices coming into stellar figures for sometimes simple parts and availability is always a problem.
I'd suggest looking at an original "ordinary" example before a basket case and remember that the D special is the D "Learners" car rather than getting involved in DSs and hydraulic gear shifts & the like which although nice & very Citroeny are also big headaches & very costly for a D beginner with no contacts or experience.
If you must have a drool, have a look at this D super from over your way and if you win lotto, you'll have something to aspire to; possibly the best I've ever seen & it is for sale.

Yes this is my only concern Tom. It's a pity that genuine like and desire has to compete with that ol' fashion guru thing.[:(]

Here's some pics from last Easter at a Citroen do in Quensland.
If you plough through, you'll see some fine examples of what you're looking for.

Even the GSMs look great. You've certainly given me a lot to look at and think about which is greatly appreciated.

Was in Brittany recently and saw all manner of old cars in use: Panhard [no idea what model], the oldest looking 2CV I've ever seen, CX's , BX's never seen so many tidy early examples and one in a champagne colour which looked superb. There were also many XM's, far outnumbering the Xantia's but every one of them looked battered. Also saw 2 DS's in use, both battered, one parked and one drove around me slowly, I don't know if they are supposed to sound like this but the transmission noise reminded me of a P4 rover I used to own. I'm afraid I wouldn't have wanted to own either car as they were both running wrecks.

But at least they were RUNNING wrecks. Might have to login to a tour of Brittany which sounds interesting for all manner of vehicular reasons [8D][:0][:D]. Thanks Mark
