Leaky LHM resevoir.

Unread post by davetd »

Hi

I've noticed LHM escaping from the rubber seal on top of the tank. I removed the clip, checked the filter assy was seated properly and refitted the clip but after a half hour drive, a bit more has slopped out.

Has anyone else had this. Seal looks ok, bit dirty thats all.

cheers in advance

The seal is there only to help prevent spillage when the fluid is flopping around during drive. The seal is not supposed to withstand any pressure at all.
Check that the vent hole/pipe is not blocked.

The fluid level should always be checked when car is manually set to HIGHest position. Then the level should be within the 2 red marker rings.
If the float is stuck high - then there is too much fluid in the reservoir - with the consequences you are experiencing now : messy spillage.

I would concur with Anders. If you are loosing a lot of fluid I would suspect that it is overfull, if its only just wet on the top, thats fairly normal.

as Anders said set the hight to its maximum, but also this needs doing when the car is on level gronud only, like petrol station forecourt, otherwise the you can get a false reading,9 out of 10 hydraulic citroens have fluid oround the ruber seal on top of the tank

The rubber seal on the LHM tank is prone to allowing LHM to seep past iy as it ages. I had this on a previous Xantia I owned a couple of years ago so I swopped the seal with a known good one, job done.

A new seal, part number 5488788 costs £4.38.

Also check the two rubber elbow joints on the plastic return pipes which don't have hose clamps, if they go hard they can start dribbling down onto the tank, and check the level site glass is locked into place properly. (It rotates clockwise to lock)
