noob question about hdi expansion tank

Hi all, been driving the xant around for about a month now and have racked up 2k or so, and thought it about time I checked the coolant level.
Have I missed something obvious because my tank appears to be black! And doesn't seem to have any external min/max indicator. It's pretty cluttered round there anyway, to see the front or side clearly(atall).
I resulted to sticking a thin dry stick in, to dip the tank

( there was about a cm of liquid on the end of the stick btw).
Surely they don't rely on the sensor ffs? Somone put me straight please.

the coolant level indicater is the slot in the tube in the top of the tank ,coolant should be up to the bottom of the slot
